Undaunted by the economy, Obama presses ahead on healthcare reformHis introduction of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) for secretary of health and human services marks an attempt to press for reforms even amid the economic crisis.President Barack Obama is pressing forward this week with plans to recast American healthcare despite the nation’s worsening economic condition, ignoring criticism that he is taking on too much.On Monday, President Obama introduced his new nominee for secretary of health and human services, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D), who will play a central role in the reform effort. On Thursday, the White House will hold a major policy summit about runaway healthcare costs.Since unveiling his proposed budget last week, which includes $634 billion toward universal health coverage, critics have said reform should wait until the economy improves. But Obama insists he was elected to provide “sweeping change,†and budget analysts say healthcare spending is a key factor in the nation’s chronic deficits.“The high rate of growth of healthcare costs is at the root of the nation’s long-term fiscal problem,†writes Robert Greenstein, executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, in a statement on the center’s website. The costs of public healthcare programs are increasing at a rate well above overall inflation, consuming more of the federal budget.Thursday’s healthcare summit will bring together members of Congress from both parties as well as stakeholders and advocacy groups in the healthcare industry.More
Obama pushes centers as one focus of health reformWASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama has been vague about details of his healthcare reform efforts, but he provided a hint on Monday of one direction he could take -- community health centers. As he announced the nominations of his two top health executives, Obama highlighted the allocation of $155 million to 126 community health centers as part of the $787 billion economic stimulus package."These health centers will expand access to care by helping people in need -- many with no health insurance -- obtain access to comprehensive primary and preventive health care services," Obama told a news conference."That helps relieve the burden on emergency rooms across the country, which have become primary care clinics for too many who lack coverage -- often at taxpayer expense."The Health and Human Services Department said the money would create 5,500 new jobs and help provide health care to an estimated 750,000 low-income Americans.More
I remember when universal health care was considered too expensive before the central government spent $2 trillion bucks on "other stuff".
At an average of $1.23 million, that won't buy much. That would work out to about 4000 s.f. each with basic equipment and furnishings. At an average of 2.5 "community heath centers" per state, it will help very few people. He'd get a lot more bang for the buck if he applied that money in the form of grants to existing hospitals....but then the Feds wouldn't own those.
Am I missing something here??? We already have community healthcare centers...they go by the name of UrgentCare Centers or clinics...or you can go to your community hospital; where everyone, by law, can go to, regardless of ability to pay. Many of these clinics/hospitals are closing because they are going out of business...there are too many hospitals already...this idiot wants to spend even more of our money opening new "community centers" when there is no need. What a nightmare.
I believe these "centers" the exalted one speaks of, will primarily perform abortions and pass out free condoms.
You will also have to go to them to get your flu shots, and anything else the government makes you take. Soon, they will be the only place to get meds, as we can't have businesses making money off the people.
