MADISON, Wisconsin — Wisconsin Senate Democratic Minority Leader Janet Bewley was involved in a fatal car crash Friday that left a 27-year-old mother from Pennsylvania and her 5-year-old daughter dead, police said Monday.

Ashland Police Chief Bill Hagstrom told the Ashland Daily Press on Monday that Bewley was not injured in the crash and the State Patrol was reconstructing the crash. No charges have been filed yet as that work continues.

“We’ll be sitting down with them and going over everything as far as determining how it all actually happened,” Hagstrom told the newspaper. “Then we’ll forward everything to the district attorney for their review because it was a fatal accident.”

Bewley, 70, is from Mason and represents northwestern Wisconsin. The accident occurred when she pulled out of a Lake Superior beach entrance and into the path of a car driven by Alyssa Ortman, according to the Ashland Police Department. When Ortman’s car collided with Bewley’s, it spun across Highway 2 and was hit by another vehicle.

Wisconsin Senate Democratic Minority Leader Janet Bewley was involved in a car accident that claimed Alyssa Ortman and her daughter died.

Just as usually what happens, the drunken driver escapes unscathed, while there's innocent people who don't.

Not sure where you're getting the drunken driver info, Frank. The article doesn't mention that and other sources I looked at don't mention it either.

Bewley stated that she had had cataract surgery the day before. And she's 70 years old.

Bewley, a Democrat who represents a district that covers the northwestern part of the state, pulled out of a Lake Superior beach entrance and into the path of a car driven by 27-year-old Alyssa Ortman of Pennsylvania, according to the Ashland Police Department. When Ortman's car collided with Bewley's, it spun across Highway 2 and was hit by another vehicle driven by 45-year-old Jodi Munson of Mason.

Ortman's 5-year-old daughter was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Ortman was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died, according to police.

Ben Baker, a reporting intern for the Journal Sentinel, was on the phone with Bewley on Friday afternoon for an interview he had arranged with her staff about this fall's elections for the Legislature.

Shortly after the interview began, Bewley told Baker she had cataract eye surgery the day before. Minutes later, she stopped talking mid-sentence and the call went silent. When Baker asked Bewley if she was still on the line, she sounded concerned. When Baker asked if she was OK, she said, "Yeah, I'm OK. This is not a good accident."

From the article's info, the surgery was the day before the accident. I've not had cataract surgery, but is driving the day after surgery OK? If the eye on which surgery was performed was not OK, that would mess with her depth perception. And if her other eye needed surgery (or would, soon) .....

And none of that excludes a certain liquid recreational chemical having had a role ...

If she was wearing these it's no wonder she didn't see the car.

And if she was on the phone she could have been distracted as well.
