I'm utterly confused by this.
Allegedly Chief S itting Bull is afflicted with some sort of slowly-progressive degenerative neuro-muscular condition, which of course is very sad, and something one would wish only on the skumbag primitive and the dysmenopausal Kansas school teacher, no one else.
Now, I'm not intimately acquainted with problems of the neuro-muscular system, and have always been under the impression one just sort of loses strength and use, nothing more than that.
Am I wrong? Is there physical pain connected with it too? I really don't know.

I'm not an expert by any means but I think neuro muscular problems can cause tingling, weakness, but also some pretty serious pain.
My experience is only with children with nerve damage from chemo. Some, like my little guy had things like 'foot drop', it caused problems with his ability to walk, run and jump, but some of the kids had very serious extremity pain.

Thank you for the illumination, madam, because I really didn't know.
One of the major things about being deaf is that one can't pick up on a lot of things; I've seen people with degenerative neuro-muscular ailments, and possibly details were "explained" to me, but I never caught on.
The most monstrous case I ever saw with my own eyes was some years ago in the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants with free medical care for all, in the main railway station in Kiev, Ukraine.
There was what was obviously a young mature male--at least his head was--on a litter. His head was very large, and about half of his entire body, the rest of him being infant-sized and shrivelled. To me, he seemed consciously alert, but he had no strength.
It was very sad, but one must remember the promise of ".....every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill laid low; the crooked straight, and the rough places plain....."
Even with free medical care for all, ultimately God is All each of us has.
Or needs.
I did have one first-hand, up-close, association with a guy who was afflicted with muscular dystophy; he was a member of a rock band in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I used to do his income taxes. The deterioration was palpable, and although at times frustration and anger was visible, I was always struck by his general acceptance and serenity.....something which most certainly retarded the progression of the ailment.
It didn't stop it, but it slowed it.
The woman to whom he was married later told me that my eyes were not deceiving me; that after being diagnosed with the condition, he resolved to leave this time and place gracefully and grateful. He forgave and forgot all old grudges, he dismissed his enemies and loved his friends.
It was supposed to have done him in within five years, but he lasted twelve.
