The city comptroller for Dixon, Illinois was arrested by FBI agents for allegedly misappropriating more than $30 million in city money to fund her personal expenses.
 
Rita Crundwell, 58, handled all finances for the city since the early 1980s.
 
She is accused of defrauding more than $3.2 million in public funds from the city of Dixon since the fall of 2011.

What is really sad is that the people of that city must have been extremely over taxed.  I mean if she was stealing that much money and it was going unnoticed, then the city must have been rolling in dough.

I wish I knew what the percentage of embezzlers that get away clean after the statute of limitations runs.

How the hell does the auditor NOT notice that $30 million has been missing, especially in a city like Dixon where the population is under 20K?

I nadined it on city-data.com, and found out the town budget for an entire year was something like $8-9 million a year.  How the hell does someone NOT notice that for over 30 years?

That's what I find incredulous too.  Routine audits should have caught something like that, as well as the fact a city's finances are public record.
