It's the Left Coast, but some of these people are amongst us who prepare.

Quote
Storm Shows Americans Are Totally Unprepared: “I have no food, I have no cash, so I’m trying to forage for something”

(Pictured:The aftermath of 2014 California storm)

As the biggest storm in five years took aim at California this week cities across the state distributed sandbags, cancelled school and warned residents to prepare for power outages. And though the storm didn’t really live up to the media hype, some people did take the warnings to heart and made last minute trips to the grocery store to stock up on foodstuffs and other supplies just so they wouldn’t have to go out in the rain.

But not everyone was prepared. One San Francisco resident in particular highlights just how susceptible America is to disasters and what to expect in the event of a widespread emergency.

Quote
“I thought we were going to watch tv all day, but now the power’s out,” Beth Ludwig said. Her mom added that the kids had never experienced a power outage before.

Georgia Virgili was one of the hundreds of thousands in the Bay Area who lost most of the conveniences of modern life.

“I didn’t have power,” Virgili said. “I couldn’t get my car out of the garage, I have no food, I have no cash, so I’m trying to forage for something.” (CBS)

Something along the lines of this storm is far more likely to happen to most of the US, than a nuclear war or an EMP.

I bet the left coasters who got caught with their pants down are the same ones who have dyspeptic tirades against anyone who prepares for these types of catastrophes.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Yes, they hate people who aren't helpless.

There's a lot of snark exhibited towards those who prepare, generated largely by that dumbass TV show "Doomsday Preppers". National Geographic is a leftist organization anyway, so it shouldn't come as a surprise, but when the SHTF, look who's on the outside looking in.

And when the "roving gangs of maniacs" as George Carlin put it, come around looking for food, water, and essentials and have no problem with using violence to take what they need, those who are prepared will survive.

Hmmm. I need more .45 ammo...looking at reloading kits...

As the Ant prepared for winter, the Grasshopper pointed and laughed.

The Grasshopper went to the Ant's home, demanding the Ant's food, as the Grasshopper believed himself to be entitled to the fruits of the Ant's labor.

The Ant, who had prepared for the Grasshopper's predictable behavior, filled the Grasshopper's belly with buckshot, and the Grasshopper was hungry no more.

Does not surprise me! I've seen collage professors do many stupid things! Beyond stupid really. An education is not a substitute for actual intelligence!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Yeah, but they will still brag about being able to do "critical thinking".

I bet you are right. I can not even begin to imagine the thinking of someone who has  no food on hand after a couple of days. How in the hell is that even possible? The kids and I could eat a relatively normal diet for probably 2-3 weeks and then one the fresh stuff ran out we would be fed on canned and boxed and many of the staples that could be thrown together assuming we have water on hand or a means to purify it for another 2 months. I just don't get how people can be ill-prepared for even a short interruption of modern conveniences. And I feel unprepared in the event of a disastrous episode not being experience with tending to farm animals or having ever grown any sort of a decent garden and living in a home now with no heating source that's not based on electric or gas but not being prepared for 2 days? I mean, maybe you deserve to be weeded out if you are that utterly devoid from your own survival. Geez.

I'm not a prepper, but damn, I'd guess that we have enough food on the shelf and freezer to last a month if we had to.

( Having a small generator doesn't make one a prepper, just someone that knows Illinois weather)

I reside in Florida and actually started "prepping" during the hurricanes that affected Florida. Since then the outlook for this country IMHO hasn't looked too rosy for awhile, so I've been slowly adding to our supply of food, water, etc.  Just wished we had moved out of the area we are in to some place more remote when we could afford it.
I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

So have I. Right now I have a weeks worth of food and water. I want to have at least 2 weeks of both. The food is mostly canned store bought food that can either be eaten cold or warm but I am thinking I may want to get some MRE type entrees for meal variety.

While you are at it, get a good water filter.  Either a Big Berkey or a Katadyn Gravidyn/Ceradyn that can do a lot of filtering.  Then get extra filters.

It's the 'Rule of Threes:'  You can die in

Three minutes without oxygen
Three hours without shelter (in inclement/cold weather)
Three days without water
Three weeks without food

Lack of water kills waaay before lack of food.

Good idea. I have plenty of water nearby but really would need a filter to drink it without getting sick.

If you are getting as much global warming as Frobisher bay is, you might need an icebreaker to get to the liquid water so that you could then filter it...

Quote

So sad.
A Canadian arctic research expedition to study "climate change" (always meaning global warming) has been derailed.

Why?
Heavy ice.

However, readers of the CBC News account of the story are left in the dark as to the exact nature of the expedition that is not to be this year.
Fortunately, a quick search has turned up a Daily Kos Kossack who is a member of that attempted expedition who was happily chirping out what it is all about last Thursday.

Here is the CBC News report that tells what happened to the Canadian Coast guard cutter without telling us what the expedition was about:

A carefully planned, 115-day scientific expedition on board the floating research vessel, the CCGS Amundsen, has been derailed as the icebreaker was called to help resupply ships navigate heavy ice in Hudson Bay.

"Obviously it has a large impact on us," says Martin Fortier, executive director of ArcticNet, which coordinates research on the vessel.
"It's a frustrating situation."

During the summer, the Amundsen operates as a floating research centre with experiments running 24 hours a day.
This year it was scheduled to reach North Baffin Bay.

But the icebreaker has been rerouted to escort commercial ships en route to resupply communities in Northern Quebec on the eastern side of Hudson Bay.

Johnny Leclair, assistant commissioner for the Coast Guard, said Tuesday conditions in the area are the worst he's seen in 20 years.

With only two icebreakers available in the Arctic
— the CCGS Pierre Radisson has been escorting resupply ships through ice-choked Frobisher Bay
— he said the only option was to re-deploy the Amundsen.

So exactly WHAT was the purpose of that 115-day scientific expedition in which the CCGS Amundsen was supposed to act as research vessel?
CBC News is apparently too embarrassed to tell us so let us check in with Kossack MarineChemist, the screen name of Jay T. Cullen who when not posting on that far left site is Associate Professor of marine chemistry at the University of Victoria in British Columbia:

From July 10 to August 20 I will be aboard the CCGS Amundsen working with a group of scientists to better understand how climate change in the Arctic is affecting important physical, biological and chemical processes and conditions in the marine environment.

...From time to time I will update on our progress and share a little about life and work on a science icebreaker.

So will your next update tell us how you are stuck in port idly playing Yukon Hold'em to kill the time while your icebreaker research vessel spends the rest of July breaking ice?
