A blast from the past...
« on: January 13, 2008, 12:50:35 PM »
at least for me...I made a meal that my mom used to make when I was a kid, and boy, was it good.  Brought back so many memories.

Share with me your favorites from the past.

Here's mine...simple, but yummy.

Cabbage and potatos

1 large head of cabbage
3-5 lbs of potatos, peeled, and cut into large chunks
1-2 rings smoked sausage or keilbasa
salt,pepper to taste

Put potatos in a stock pot, cover with water, plus about 3-4 inches more.  Cut the cabbage into large chunks (I cut it into wedges, about 6-8 pieces) leaving the core behind.  Add to the pot.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Cook over low heat all day (or at least 4-6 hours).  An hour or so before serving, add the sausage to the pot (I put the sausage in whole, then, just before serving, I take it out an slice it then add it back in for serving) leaving it on top of the other inredients.

Serve with a crusty bread.

It's even better the 2nd day.

Sounds very good.  I love cabbage...especially stewed with bacon or any sort of pork.  I also love corned beef and cabbage.

My mom made the same thing.  I'm not a fan of keilbasa or polish sausage (too salty) but I love boiled cabbage.  There's no better way to clear out a crowded room after dinner.

Here's a "Mom" recipe I remember (good when the food budget is stretched beyond its limit)

Elbow macaroni
Leftover ham, diced
1/2 stick Butter
2-3 eggs
Salt & Pepper
Parmesan Cheese (optional)

Boil elbow macaroni according to package directions.  Once you pour the mac into the colander to drain it, add 1/2 stick of butter to the pot, add the ham and sautee until lightly browned.  Add drained macaroni back in and add the eggs.  Stir over low - medium heat until eggs are cooked (will be like scrambled).

Add parmesan if desired and salt & pepper to taste.....Serve!

Good with a salad.
