When I was heating with oil I had a 275 gallon tank. It could cost a bushel of cash to fill that puppy and blow the monthly budget. I was in that house for five years, the heating oil fired the furnace and the hot water tank. The first year (I moved in in Aug) I got lucky with the previous tennant leaving me an almost full tank and that lasted almost to Christmas, mostly using just the hot water heater and not so much the furnace until November. Then it got cold.
I had the tank refilled, with a little sticker shock and hoped it would be later than sooner before I had to have it filled again. Wrong. The house was built in 1836 and was about as well insulated as a picnic pavilion. No wonder the rent was low, $275/mo. The house was in very good shape for its age but the plaster and lath walls were hollow, the newer windows helped a bit. Electric was cheap, not a factor really at about $30/mo. so my rent and utilities were roughly $300/mo for half of the year. For the other half of the year that figure was triple, hence the low rent.
The price of heating oil in the winter months can make you wince, almost double what it is in summer so I wised up quick. After that first winter I went down to the heating oil company and had a chat with the nice lady there in the front office. She showed me the monthly price fluctuations over the past five years, always bottoming out in late July. I asked if I could buy ahead of time, "sure, no problem". Bingo. I sold some toys, a boat and a snowmobile to pony up some cash and went back when the price bottomed and pre paid $3000 when it was $2.15/gal and made myself budget for the next year so it wasn't so bad and I didn't have to sell things just to keep the heat on. Roughly the cost to rent the place averaged out to about $600/mo. That next march I had to buy more oil at almost $5/gal to get me through the rest of the winter. I gambled and got half a tank for just over $600. It got me through till the weather began to warm up but not quite really, April was still cold but not as brutal as Dec-Mar so I didn't have to worry about the pipes freezing and being single then I just put up with it. I bought my oil in advance each sumer for the next four years. After remarrying my wife & I got another 100+ year old New York farmhouse but this one has been heavily remodeled and upgraded and heats with natural gas  :-). I'm thinking about adding a pellet stove to the kitchen.
I will never never heat with oil again.

Crazy gas price spike. The cost of a gallon of regular here has held at $3.69/9 for about a month. Yesterday it was $4.12/9. Today it is back to $3.69/9 again. ???!!!!

Looks like the price is pretty much rock steady around here for the time being, with no major swings more than a couple of pennies either way in about two weeks.

AAA says national average is up about 4 cents over the last week, and 25 cents since last month, but most of that increase took place in the first two weeks of this month.  We should see what happens as Libya shakes out and refineries come out of spring outages and start summer runs, meaning higher gasoline inventories.

I paid $3.49 yesterday.

I saw a sign for $2.99 today but then realized the station has been closed for months. I paid $3.439 at BJ's

Of course a buddy sent me an email saying Exxon was going to be running porn clips on the pump monitors so the customers could watch someone else getting screwed at the pump. :rimshot:  Don't forget to tip the waitstaff folks.

Regular went back up over the weekend, but I forgot what it went up to.  I will check tomorrow.  And while I am thinking about gas prices, I think Shell is pretty dang tricky with their pump placement.  F'ers put the HIGH grade smack in the middle.  I prefer to fill up with midgrade, but the last two times I was at the pump my car got a treat.  My 10 cent a gallon discount didn't go too dang far.

My sad lament is this that the old car got better mileage but took hightest. ( 2mpg believe it or not for way more HP ) They are both six cylinders.  One was German, one is American.   Then too the Mercedes didn't have a remote starter. :thatsright:

Not all of the gas tax is for health care, which is a part I don't mind paying on stuff. Most of the health care funding comes from income tax.

Canadians got snowballs?   :rotf:   Yeah I guess that would figure.  I really do need to download Canadian Bacon, 'ey?  The few, the proud, the Canucks, presiding over a vast empty.

After reading Compaq's last post I am guessing my trip to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton won't be happening.  But I am thinking Maine may be worth about half a tank.  Compaq, it has nothing to do with you guys health care I just don't want to spend that much money on fuel this summer.

I just picked the fuel oil delivery receipt off the door which shows this delivery at $3.09 for dyed number two heating oil (diesel by any other name I do believe)  and at 165 gallons that would be about $510.  So I can burn fuel oil going to Cape Breton and shiver next winter or I can burn fuel oil next winter and look at pictures of Cape Breton in a toasty warm living room.

$3.09 for heating oil?  No shit?  WHERE?

It's starting to (slowly) come down but most places are still in the $3.50-3.60 range.  I've used this site for comparison and it's pretty accurate:

Help may be on the way in the next couple of years. Boone Pickens stated that Congress will pass a Natural Gas energy bill by July 4. It will be to convert diesel trucks to natural gas. However, I suspect it will also apply to natural gas distribution to homes. We are swimming in natural gas. The price is very low but has recently picked up. EXXON purchased XTO (a major natural gas corporation)  for a reason. They see the handwriting on the wall. Natural gas can greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Bummer might have something right for a change.

Cars and trucks driving around with liquid gasoline is one thing, having them going around with pressurized natural gas is a whole other safety concern IMO.

Natural gas will be our best chance to wean ourselves of foreign oil. Greenie energy will not do it
