Instead of asking why Dems are drifting so far to the left...
why isn't anybody asking why Repubs have drifted so far to the right?
I know, rhetorical question, but damn...the rightward drift keeps on going.

I'd say that's a false premise.
Republicans hold essentially the same positions they have for years. The left has adopted positions they could never have gotten away with, say, 10 or 20 years ago.
The left has moved so far left that it seems to them that the right has moved to the far right.

My whole life, I've watched the Republican party.
And it's slowly shifted left, to about where the Democrats were at during the Kennedy administration.

Pretty much. There is scarcely an issue on which the Ds haven't gone leftward, sometimes even reversing their position to do so (e.g. same-sex marriage).
