My Buddy's Grandson

My Buddy Lou's Grandson, Alex Wifler, will be representing the USA in the World Archery Youth Championships in Legnicia, Poland. Alex and his mom reside with my buddy in rural Crete, IL.

Alex has never lost an archery contest.

I'll take a pic of the sign in Lou's front yard when I go out in a while and post it here.

Lou is so proud of his grandson that his buttons on his shirt are popping off!

While many students will be loading up their backpacks and savoring the last precious days of summer, Alex Wifler will be on his way to Legnicia, Poland.

The 17-year-old from Crete and his two teammates, Matthew Zumbo, 17, of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Eliot Simon, 15, of Sayville, N.Y., will represent the United States at the World Archery Youth Championships from Aug. 22 to 28.

This isn’t the first time the sport he loves has brought Wifler overseas. He’s competed in Germany and trained in Korea, and traveled across America for tournaments.

So how did the home-schooled teenager end up bound for Poland?

“It’s definitely not overnight,” Wifler said. “It’s definitely hours and days and years of hard work.”

Then he corrects himself.

“A year of hard work.”

Wifler began shooting six years ago with a compound bow, but just last year he switched to the Olympic recurve, which is the only bow used in the Olympic Games.

“Four weeks after he picked up the recurve last year, he took fourth in the nation at indoor,” his mother, Chris Wifler, said

That's awesome! I hope we get to see some televised coverage. I'm not holding my breath though if Olympic coverae by the networks is any indication. Seems there is a total media blackout in the U.S. of any of the shooting sports but endless figure skating and gymnastics.

It's amazing how many people are totally unaware that shooting and archery events even exist at all in the Olympics because they have never seen coverage of it.

Grandpaw should be proud. Congratulations to him and his grandson.

On a side note. My son got his archery merit badge at Scout Camp a couple of weeks ago. So, I called him in here to tell him about the kid and his upcoming trip/competition. Son says, "Well, I did pretty good at summer camp. I was the best in the group." I said, "It's a wonder you didn't shoot yourself in the foot." He goes, "Hey now!"... :rotf:...I give the boy a hard time... :rotf:

Well, I haven't seen Lou, but Alex's team lost to Poland.

This will just strengthen his resolve to become better.
