I removed my sister from my Facebook list

I just started using Facebook.  She's a hardcore liberal and had been posting stuff about politics (light-hearted stuff, it seemed), so I added some of my own light-hearted comments.  Well, she sent me an email the other day asking me to not comment about politics on her Facebook profile because we both know where we stand and there's no reason to discuss it.  What the hell?  So I figured fine - my love for her is more important than causing her distress over something so stupid as politics, so I took her off my list.  Problem solved.

I'm assuming it's the "other" myspace.  *shrugs*  I don't really use networking sites.  My myspace page I set up as a joke.

It is another myspace.  I have a page, mostly to view pics of my grandkids and keep up with my nieces.  I think my daughter-in-law was about the first to have one, to share pics with her family, and my daughter found it...so we all ended up on there.

I believe everyone I know has a private profile, so pics can't be viewed by anyone who isn't accepted as a friend. 

We've found all kinds of people on there, former pastors, friends from where I grew up, etc.

Facebook is also a good place to find old classmates from college or high school. It's a PITA to edit the profile though.

Ahh, my crotchety, narrow sited friend. There are legitimate reasons you know that people go their seperate ways and they aren't always because people just didn't want to be friends anymore. Particularly, as conservatives I think we all understand how we get busy with life and making a way for ourselves and sometimes we ALL leave people behind, even if they were important to us. For me(and many of my friends), Hurricane Andrew happened before cell phones were widely used by most or before most stayed connected via the internet. Because of it, I lost connection with numerous friends and after a few moves lost any number I ever had for a bunch of them. I took to finding those folks when myspace, classmates.com, and other resources became more widely used. Some, would have probably ended because the would have legitimately fizzled with time, however the people I reconnected with who probably would have stayed friends have once again blossomed into wonderful friendships and we have just kind of picked up at a different time in our lives. The friendship itself still 'feels' the same. I would think that for someone who seems to get emotionally invested sometimes in the woes of others here, you surely understand the desire of REAL LIFE old friends to want to reconnect and rekindle a friendship that either went neglected or got lost along the way. IN fact, I find far more argument for someone wanting to connect with someone they actually knew versus sharing woes with someone whom they only know by an anonymous screen name.

Now, I for one don't discount the power of internet friendships, so just know I'm making a point.

And yeah, I'm picking on ya cause sometimes you sound like an old, stubborn, judgemental fart when it comes to these things and I feel as your 'little sister' I gotta come on over there and tap ya on the noggin and tell you to knock it off(if you keep it up, I'll be forced to play my car stereo loud pops and keep you from the cool whip salad!! ).

As far as crotchety and judgmental -- I plead guilty as charged.

I also know with 100% certainty that no one will ever use anything on the interwebz against me, since there is almost no information out there.  I have even managed to have my RL address and phone number scrubbed.

How many stupid people have lost jobs, scholarships and even their college admissions lost due to not understanding the simplest rule: The Internet is forever. Those of us who helped build it know that in our souls.

It always amazes me how people make a big deal about High School (I am being exemplary).  It is stupid and silly do care about people, places and events from 20-30 years ago.  It was a couple of years in your life.

Caring about HS is as silly as blaming your parents for your actions as an adult.

Good point.  I'll just go tell all my friends from High School that their just silly people I only knew for a couple of years.

I only was in HS for 2 years -- I graduated early via Night School.

I was a GDI -- I did get Best Actor of the Year, but that was about it. Nothing bad, nothing great.  HS was a non-event in my life.

I've decided to modify my long post to just ask since we know your position on the topic and you know that others are adults and accept the risks, why the rallying cry in even the most benign threads?

I've also wondered why you participate in a forum like this that can be read by anyone? You have told us at times the precise airport you are in at the time. I'm just not certain if this is so important an issue why you use the internet for anything but work. I just think if it was for me, I would not use it for anything but the things that are absolutely necessary and lets face it--cc is not a necessity for anyone here.

Every great now and then -- we've all had those chuckles many times before. 

I am mostly ranting about the Al Bundys of the world.  I see it on TV a lot -- people who waste time with HS reunions, who carry events in HS with them into their adulthood, that kind of thing.

Ahh..I'll agree with you there. I have never went to a reunion, but I never graduated either. *gasp* Now you know something else about me too.

That said, I've never much been into the whole high school experience anyway so I wouldn't go back to it. BUT, I do have friends I've known since those times who I really enjoy as the adults they've become too. Like you, we reminisce on oddities of our youth, but mostly we talk about the here and now and things we plan to do. I think I understand you better now, but of course it is not what you originally said so the clarification is helpful.

Like I noted, hon, I lost touch with friends because of one of those big sweeping natural disasters that come through in a time when internet and cell phones weren't in broad use. It was a very unusual situation and because we were all so young and our roots not firmly planted yet, it was very easy to lose touch with the aid of technologies like there are today. Just about everyone had a landline and most of those were out of commission for months if not forever if homes were declared uninhabitable and they didn't move back in. Portability for numbers wasn't what it is today. Add to that once some time had passed, my girlfriends got married and now had different names.  I've had an easier time locating the guys I was friends with.

Anyway, all that said, I'm glad I used the technology to find them. There were some friendships there that indeed would have and did continue. And I use myspace and my cell now to ensure that unusual circumstances don't intervene for us to lose touch ever again. It's really as simple as that.

FWIIW, I didn't "graduate," although they didn't have the GED in my day.  Like I said, I went to night school for my final courses and had the school mail me my diploma.
