Rep. Carla Skinder would like to set the record straight: She owns six horses, a donkey, six sheep, a potbellied pig, two dogs and a cat. Plus, her husband has a horse of his own.
So when she proposed a bill requiring all horse owners to pay an annual $25 registration fee and prove their equine had been vaccinated for rabies, she knew the fee would come out of horse owners' pockets.
"I'm walking the walk and talking the talk," Skinder, a Democrat from Cornish, said yesterday. "I love horse people. I am one. And I think it's time for us as a group, as a horse community, to come together and see what we can do to help the state."
What she did not realize was how angry it would make said horse community.
As news about the bill spread last weekend - through e-mails and phone messages - in horse organizations, barns and advocacy groups, the messages about the "horse tax" began piling up on Skinder's answering machine. Several bill opponents say they expect a crowd of more than 100 to attend a House committee hearing on the proposal today. Rep. Henry Parkhurst, a co-sponsor of the bill, said he's received threats of physical violence.. .

You will be getting that pony, but you'll have to pay tax on it. :(

Well, but everyone knows that rabid horses are a huge problem. They're always running around and biting people. [/sarcasm] ::) ::)

It must be a serious problem. Until now I never knew that horses could get rabies. (I suppose I did in the sense that I knew all mammals could get it.)

I suppose it is serious for the individual horse but I have never heard of rabid horses being a risk (as opposed to the warnings about dogs, monkeys etc in travel books. )

Horses do bite. I've known several people seriously hurt by them biting. One fellow lost an ear to one, a chuck out of a hip, 3 people who have lost fingers. One fellow has a high dollar pass-a-fina (I can't spell it), horse bite off 3 fingers at the palm and swallowed them. He shot the horse, cut it open, retrieved the fingers and drove himself to the hospital. They couldn't reattach the fingers.
When I asked if he regretted shooting the horse after they couldn't reattach his fingers, ....his answer can't be typed here..... :rotf:
