Cruelty hits home
Back in April 2023 I took in a family of Ukrainian refugees. Mom, dad, two teenage sons, 4 year old daughter. They had lived in Kharkiv, a city in far eastern Ukraine close to Russia. They originally fled to Poland but then sought asylum in Italy. While they were safe there, they had no success finding employment. So they came to the US in February 2023.

As I understand it, there were several programs set up by the Biden administration to help refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan. The initial programs soon filled up and the family was allowed in under a later program which had more requirements and timelines. I don’t understand the differences. The mom is very focused and stays on top of everything. Right now she is at the Ukrainian consulate in San Francisco picking up new passports for the kids.

Both parents have college degrees. The mom speaks four languages. Both parents quickly found jobs and have been working for almost two years. Putting money into Social Security that they will never benefit from. I have been letting them live here for free. I don’t have a mortgage so I don’t need income. My water and electric bills have gone up about $100/month but I can handle that. The plan was they could save enough money to rent a place (first and last, security and cleaning deposits). I gave them until at least until the end of the school year in June, 2025, to move. I plan to sell my house next year and need a few months to prep the house. I’ve lived here for 40 years and there’s so much stuff to deal with.

The kids have been attending school and learning English. Playing basketball on school teams.

No telling how or when this new outrage will hit them.

They have social security cards?

I don't know the particulars of applicable SSA law, but if they are here legally and allowed to work, presumably so.

DUpipo have the peculiar skill of posting obscure allusions to news stories, allusions so obscure a normal person could not figure out to what the allusion refers. Anyway, I'm guessing this might be the unmentioned context:

Leavitt Calls Reuters 'Fake News' for Ukraine Deportation Story

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/trump-ukraine-status/2025/03/06/id/1201698/

Quote
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says a Reuters report published Thursday that the Trump administration is planning to revoke temporary legal status for some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict with Russia is "fake news."

"This is more fake news from Reuters based on anonymous sources who have no idea what they are talking about," she said in a post on X.

"The truth: no decision has been made at this time."

If my guess is correct, the DU thread is about an unsurprising MSM lie.

Yep.
What sticks out for me was "They originally fled to Poland but then sought asylum in Italy."
Why go to Italy?
Poland would be safe enough.
See, my brother used to live in Ukraine up until a year ago. He lived in Lviv, regarded as the safest city in that entire country due to its close proximity to the Polish border. At one point in my brother's time there, he did briefly flee to Poland and seek temporary refugee status there. If a person in Ukraine at this time manages to get into Poland, that citizen is safe.
Putin may be nuts, but he's not stupid. He knows that allowing his forces to get anywhere near the Polish border would be a colossally bad idea, for two reasons:
1. As anyone with a decent knowledge of 20th century history would know, Poland has some past experience with being invaded and occupied by a foreign army headed by a merciless dictator. Thus, the Polish people will fight tooth and nail to the last man standing to prevent such a thing from EVER happening to them again.
2. More importantly, Poland is part of the European Union. Standard EU policy dictates that a threat to one EU nation will be regarded as a threat to all of them, and treated accordingly. So, if Russia attacks Poland, or even appears to be coming close to doing so, it will lead to all 27 EU nations taking up arms against them, which would be pretty much guaranteed to kick off World War III. Putin is of course aware of this (Again, he's nuts, but not stupid), and would not desire that outcome.
So, yeah, if this imaginary Ukraine family manages to make it into Poland, they would be safe there and would not need to go all the way into Italy.
DUmmies lie, all the time.

I’m calling BS on this story. But here’s a couple things that strikes me as odd. Poland is a beautiful stable country. Why did they leave? We’re they’re not enough free benefits? I don’t understand why they would want to go to Italy is full and doesn’t really want any more immigrants, so I guess they chose to come to the good old US of A because we have deeper pockets and more benefits for immigrants.

I can relate to my fellow story fabricator, DUer central fantasizer, because I’m pretending to deal with a somewhat similar situation. Back when I attended the Fictional Spirit-Guide Academy, I met an exchange student from Ukraine named Y-Dog. For the record, Y-Dog isn’t his name, but his actual name is so difficult for Englishers to pronounce that he chose to just go by Y-Dog.

Well, Y-Dog and his family lived in eastern Ukraine and was able to escape by the skin of their fictional teeth just as Putin’s forces rolled in. Unlike my fellow story fabricator, DUer central fantasizer, I didn’t think to give my fictional Ukrainian family a deadline to move out into the streets, but I suppose I’m just not as “compassionate” as a DUer.

Anyway, Y-Dog and his family would like to offer a hale and hearty F-you to DUer central fantasizer for its little “look at how great I am” fairy tale and suggests that the DUmmie consult a physician for its severe case of rectal-cranium inversion.
Fictional spirit-guiding by appointment.

For new members and lurkers: I am a fictional spirit-guide with no smell whatsoever. I am part irish setter and part pigeon. If you don't smell any strange smells it means I'm probably standing next to you. As I am a fictional character anything I post should possibly be considered fictional.

The eastern provinces are primarily Russian-speaking and have been shelled by the Ukrainians AZOF battalion since the CIA orchestrated a coup against the popularly elected Viktor Yanukovytch in 2014 when he was wanting to normalize relations with Russia. I'm calling bullshit. If their intention was to flee, it would have been a helluva lot earlier than 2023. Tell me you don't know dick about the situation without telling me.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site
