Other countries might be making big investments in education... who cares.

Nobody would like it. But it would be just as accurate and reliable.

Countries with far lower investment get far greater results for many of the kids. That's the great secret that everybody knows and nobody wants to discuss, because it leads to non-PC conclusions. We're forced to blame the victim in many cases, because the victim is also the victimizer (or the victimizer is the kid's parents). While we privatize success, we socialize failure and claim that the victim is victimized by society; if the parents are at fault, then it's because of society. Whatever it takes to make sure that somebody else is responsible--to ensure that we, their saviors and messiahs, have to carry their burden. And if we fail, then we blame others because having assumed the burden, we delegated all responsibility to other people but reserve all of the authority for ourselves.

Like this isn't an apt description of an inherently dysfunctional system.

We insist on "we built that" when business owners claim hard work and talent is primarily responsible for their business. It's also true for American education. We focus on charter schools and privatization, but the problems in K-12 ed have been around for 40 years while charters school and most of the testing movement are recent. In other words, we say that the conditions 40 years ago are the effect and the cause is only 5-15 years old. (Got TARDIS?)

the gun problem would solve itself. But we value a right to any gun more than we value a right to a solid education.

Few are complaining about $100K a year college and jobs to Asia. But subject internet gun buyers to background checks and waiting periods for guns and ammo, and my god the apocalypse is here

14. America values guns over a strong education system. They learn about guns by way

of an education system neutered by No Child Left Behind, charter schools and unrestrained corporate influence where, for example, in Texas, they have tried with some success to eliminate slavery, Thomas Jefferson, etc from classrooms. The political class would like us arguing in the trenches about guns rather than arguing for holding the rich accountable for poverty, job loss, etc.

The NRA and their message on guns is far more successful than the message that a strong education system is a better investment than a system of guns and gun violence.   Number of tax dollars going to the NRA?

I know this is true because the political class in America don't give a damn about taking education and opportunity away from millions of people. That is a fact. They don't. Or we'd have fewer guns, fewer gun deaths.   Just 

But discuss gun regulations and suddenly the shills come out of the woodwork.

Even in this discussion you can see that instead of focusing on the original premise "guns take investment away from education" my premise was twisted and manipulated into something I clearly did not say.   You built that ridiculous non sequitur,  Not them.

Guns do that. They take value away from meaningful discussion and opportunists will exploit every opportunity to distract and deflect and score a few personal political points

The United States spends more than other developed nations on its students' education each year, with parents and private foundations picking up more of the costs, an international survey released Tuesday found.

Despite the spending, U.S. students still trail their rivals on international tests.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development — which groups the world's most developed countries — writes in its annual report that brand-new and experienced teachers alike in the United States out-earn most of their counterparts around the globe. But U.S. salaries have not risen at the same pace as other nations.

The findings, part of a 440-page tome of statistics, put the United States' spending on its young people in context.

The United States spent more than $11,000 per elementary student in 2010 and more than $12,000 per high school student. When researchers factored in the cost for programs after high school education such as college or vocational training, the United States spent $15,171 on each young person in the system — more than any other nation covered in the report.

That sum inched past some developed countries and far surpassed others. Switzerland's total spending per student was $14,922 while Mexico averaged $2,993 in 2010. The average OECD nation spent $9,313 per young person.

What do these two pix have to do with each other?

One looks like a pic for a brochure for one of those for-profit vo-techs Libs & Progs love to hate. The young woman is, apparently, Hispanic, but there are many Hispanics in the US, in the Western US especially. So the pic could be from a US educational institution, public or private.

The other pic purports to be of two dudes with guns posing in a Chipotle. Chipotle is a restaurant, a corporation, not a government or private educational institution. The viewer doesn't know whether the two dudes are Physics PHD candidates or high school drop-outs living in Section 8 housing on social program bennies.

Further, I think the latter pic may be a fairly well done fauxtoshop. The edges of the images of the two dudes with guns don't quite look right. Further, there are two dudes with long guns posing for a pic in a Chipotle and none of the three customers in the background are looking in their direction? Sorry, even in a town where guns are well accepted at least one of those customers would demonstrate curiosity at such an unusual thing by looking at what's happening.
