Title: Sources: Intrepid prez touted for Navy secretary (*he's openly gay)

As president of Manhattan's Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Bill White has managed the restoration of a World War II aircraft carrier. Now, some Congressional and former military leaders think the Long Island native should manage the entire U.S. Navy.

They are touting the 41-year-old Manhattan resident as secretary of the Navy in the Obama administration.

The appointment would make the former Point Lookout resident the first openly gay chief of a branch of the military. And that could make his selection tricky because the government and the country have not resolved the issue of gays openly serving in the Armed Forces.

White, who has worked at the Intrepid since 1992, is not a veteran but other armed forces secretaries have lacked military experience. White has extensive contacts in the defense field through his work at the museum ship that recently returned to its Hudson River pier after a two-year restoration. He also serves as president of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The fund has raised more than $100 million for families of military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq and for construction of an armed forces rehabilitation center in San Antonio, Texas.

Oooooh, great idea, Jimmuh Cawter for HUD.  :-)

I think this idea is being floated to see if this will appease  the poop punchers and rug munchers.

It's an policy wonk administrative position they shuffle paper work report to the president. they take their cues from downline administrators who take their cues from administrators downline from them. When things work fine they get the credit. when things don't work fine they got someone downline to blame.

the service secretaries are NOT just admin positions... they are legally in the chain of command, which at the top is POTUS, then SECDEF, then the various service secretaries.  the generals that you see touted as service heads are "Chief of Staff" positions, and act as advisors, having no overall command authority.

now how do you think the USMC will react to an openly gay man in their COC (the Marines fall under the Navy)?

I helped paint a rowboat once, and I'm older than this guy.

Maybe I could be SecNav?

When they've destroyed it.

I'd say he's probably better qualified for that then this guy is for the job of Secretary of the Navy.

When they've destroyed it.

No, they still wouldn't get it because they'd convince themselves that Republicans were to blame.

I bet he changes the Navy song from "Anchors Aweigh" to "In the Navy."

Well this appointment would certainly set up the arrival of Colin Powell as SecDef in a year when Gates is gone.

His reversal on DADT now makes perfect sense.

About this WWII aircraft carrier -- the NY Guard wanted to hold an enlistment ceremony on the carrier.   Mr. White refused the request.

Maybe he would be better off being in charge of a military museum in San Fagcisco.

It's not a social experiment the fags and their commie supporters are after. They want total denigration and destruction of our military. As the fags move up and through the ranks of the military, eventually our military will consist of leaders that would rather perform fellatio on our enemies than kill them.

From the sound of his resume, he seems like a very public-spirited guy who has made some great contributions (aside from any $$$ ones that is), but as far as making him SecNav, that is just a really, really bad idea.

This is a lot like Clinton making Togo West his SecArm.  He had at least served one short tour of duty in the Army 20 years earlier when Carter was President, although it was as a 'Special' JAG tour, nominally at the Pentagon but actually hobnobbing with Congresscritters wearing civvies every day for about two years, until he could get a seemly 'early release' to work on real political jobs.  Togo had the advantage that the SecDefs took the hits instead of him, and managed to get through the whole thing with his resume intact.

Just as an aside, the military has been used for social experiments for quite some time now.

Just off the top of my head, integration of the services was ordered by Truman in the late Forties. Due to foot-dragging, particularly in the Army (even the Soldier's General Omar Bradley bad-mouthed the idea), things didn't come about until the mid-Fifties.

Enter women into the military academies, beginning in 1976.

The military is just about the only place where the sitting president can employ his social experiments pretty much with impunity.

Don't get me wrong -- I think permitting openly practicing gays in the military is really bad idea. Just the logistics of the thing wigs me out, much less the likelihood of some poor schmuck walking in on two of his roommates giving each other a lip lock, or worse.

My point is this -- His Highness may well pursue a "re-review" of DADT or even institute a presidential commission to find a way to permit fudgepackers and rug munchers to openly practice their sexual orientation while wearing the uniform.

There may not be a damned thing we can do about it, either.
