It's hardly something new. The Left has been faking hate crimes for ages. Jena 6, anyone? Duke Lacrosse? Tawana Brawley?
Yes, there is the occasional right-wing fake hate crime (the girl who carved a W into her forehead immediately leaps to mind), but overwhelmingly, these hoaxes are committed by the Left. And it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out why: the entire premise of Leftist thought is victimization. Everyone (other than white Christian males) is a "victim" of something, and if the Left can't find cases of actual victimization, they'll simply make something up. Either they'll pick some sympathetic person and create a victimization of them (Tawana Brawley, Charlene Dill), or, more commonly (in my observation), they'll create some new and exciting way in which someone can be a victim ("environmental racism" or someone not getting a tip and that suddenly is because they are a lesbian or creating people who allegedly couldn't vote because of ID laws when literally not a single person has ever been wrongly denied a vote due to such laws).
Ultimately, it's part and parcel of Leftist dogma: any time something that a Leftist doesn't like happens, no matter whether real or imagined, it's the fault of some bogeyman who inevitably turns out to fit one or more bigoted Leftist stereotypes: white, rich, male, Christian, patriotic, etc. And if that means manufacturing some sort of "controversy" to bring that "victimization" to life, then so be it: the ends justify the means, no matter who it hurts. If it means destroying an entire sports team over some "crime" that never happened, then that's justified because they're rich and white. If that means that some cop ultimately commits suicide at least largely in part because he was falsely accused of abducting and raping a Black girl, then it's OK because you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette, and the pig probably had it coming anyway. If blaming all Republicans for the death of some young lady in Florida who was almost certainly actually murdered by her SEIU lobbyist "friend," it's worth the ink in Leftist media because it "highlights the cause," the murdered woman be damned, and the narrative is good, even if it's utterly and completely false. The list goes on and on and on. The Left excuses the dogmatic lying, because they believe that there is some "greater truth" in their lies. "Fake but accurate" becomes something that is actually considered valid by these deluded fools.
