The SATA drive that I had in another computer was used for storage. Windows didn't explain it to me, but it said it couldn't use that drive to install itself on. No Biggie. I ran up to Best Buy and got a deal on a 320 GB SATA drive ($50 +tax) I did put my storage drive back into its original PC and it works fine. :clueless:

I also ran into a LOT of prompts for a cd/dvd driver when trying to install. Somehow, it finally got past that issue. I have read that Lite On dvd rws don't like to read burned DVDS, so THAT could have been it.
Yes!
While cheap and fast, LiteOn drives can be flaky when it comes to optical media burned on other drives. You know, I have a bunch of multi-hundred gig hard drives in external IEEE USB 2.0 cases sitting idle. If'n youse or anyone wants them, send me a picture of your hands and I'll ship them out to you.
Of course, I'll have to 'remove' the Furry Porn from them first.  :-)

You'll have to wait on that pic. My camera is in the truck and it's raining...... I will venture out shortly to get some smokes. Perhaps when I return.......

My wife has a Buffalo external (500G) drive that "died" At first it would cause the comp to lock up, so we disconnected it. Now if we try to fire it up, the power light comes on, you hear a click, and then the drive shuts down. I'm thinking a bad PS (external) or if the drive is bad, are these things salvageable, like you are talking about, putting the discs in something else?

More than likely, the drive has gone bad. There are a number of electronics involved with a drive, so it could be a number of things.

As far as swapping the platters in a drive, yes, but one has to REALLY know what they're doing. I don't have a good drive that I'm willing to cannibalize to try that experiment. I have read that it's a very tricky process. Perhaps one day.

Onboard video swiped 512 MB RAM....... which is fairly typical of onboard video. Perhaps in the future, I MIGHT get an actual video card and free up that RAM

Ah, I see.  Is a video card in the near future?  Out of five computers in our house, only the laptop uses it's onboard video.

Probably not in the near future. I have other things to do and a very limited budget. It took me since Jan to acquire all of the parts to build this beast. Hell, did you see the motherboard?? HDMI Out, etc. It's working right well at the moment and I really don't see a need for that kind of expenditure at this point.

Yeah, some of the top of the line new video cards can cost more than building a decent computer.

I'll say. While this card may be more than I need or can use, it would be kind of cool: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195094  I'd probably have to save up for a year for that one and still probably couldn't use all of its features. (That's over 2x as much as my PC cost to build)

And that cross-fire supported means that two can be ran in parallel? That would make for a killer gaming machine.

As I understand it, yes. I'm not much into gaming, so I haven't paid much attention to that stuff.

As I understand it the video cards memory is still mapped onto the system memory.

How well do you like Windows 7?

I'm still running Vista.

Holy Crap!

Over $1200 for a video card?

I don't "see" a lot of difference between W7 and Vista. Not real fond of the 64 bit app right yet.

What particulars about the 64 bit don't you like?

Program compatibility. I can't install a 32 bit program in a 64 bit windows, at least windows won't let me. I've had to go find a 64 bit printer/ scanner app, and some other stuff.

Thought I'd pull up this old thread where I mentioned my wife's external HD bit the dust. Turns out it was the interface inside the drive case that went bad. All's good, the HD inside is fine.   :hyper:
