Why I'm sick of hearing about "protecting taxpayers".
There's a municipal election going on in Toronto, and local Conservative mayoral candidate Rob Ford is using the slogan of Protecting Taxpayers. All around the city, candidates for school trustee and city councillor, be they right-wing, "centrist", or even "liberal" are putting tax cuts, fiscal responsibility, and "respect for your tax dollars" at the top of their lists.

My former boss once told me that people are angry. Angry at being taxed too much and having their tax dollars mismanaged. Granted, the actual mismanagement of city funds is a valid complaint. But where is the outrage for people like my friend Katie?

You have to wonder what kind of city this was that didn't have a Christian owned homeless shelter. If there is such a city... Or could it be that Katie dislikes Christians so much, she refused their help?

I'm the only kid out of my neighborhood that made it out and made something of myself. I guess I should feel sorry for the rest, but I can point out where they made decisions that led them to where they are, and a lot are dead, in jail, or on welfare. I think I'm more of the "You made you're bed now lay in it type" because of that.

I grew up in Florida north of Pensacola. Pensacola Arms and Escambia Arms were about as ghettoish as you can get and both were surrounded by a fence with wire on the top except at the entrance point. I have a friend who owns a company that does a lot of landscaping work down there, and he takes workers wherever he can find them. He hired a seventeen year old kid out of Escambia Arms one day and found that the he was intelligent and willing to work, so he was trying to advance this kid up a bit. After about three weeks, the kid came in and quit. When my friend pressed him for a reason, the kid said he was being harassed in the hood for acting white. Who needs machine guns when everyone around you is against your success.

George Bush was absolutely right when he commented that not expecting people to stand on their own two feet because of their skin color was bigoted. Unfortunately, too many blacks believe they aren't capable without the government helping them.

OK, I imagined it.
In MY family, we pitch in to help our own, and don't wait for Government to do it for us. We don't expect some stranger to foot the bill for us, we just suck it up and figure out how to re-prioritize our own finances to cover it.

Oh, I think I know "Katie" quite well: A know it all, spoiled-assed, knuckle-headed teenager who decided that following rules of the house was way too much trouble and she'd be better off on her own.

Been there, done that, twice.

The first time, said dumbass teenager managed to straighten himself out. The second time, younger dumbass teenager got to spend a little over a year in juvie with my full support and encouragement to have his ass locked up. It's amazing what being sober for a year and without freedom will do to the perspective of a know it all, spoiled-assed, knuckle-headed teenager. What's even more amazing is that his dumb ass is still alive and no longer hanging out with fellow dumbasses. He's now figuring out that "holy shit, mom and dad were right all along".

Reality is a cruel and hateful bitch and he'll be dancing with her for a long time.

See, DUmbass, he's family and we take care of each other. If you want to be an underage self destructive fool who knows better than everyone else then you get treated like one. If you continue said behavior, you get the iron bar Hilton to contemplate your mistakes. Had this fool managed to right himself under the umbrella of love and support from his family, his life would have been much different for the past two years. Since he didn't want to, he got the final option. It's tough, it's brutal, it causes a ton of pain, but it's necessary at times.

Sounds to me like "Katie" needed a bit of the final option and maybe she would have appreciated what she had. Instead, you want to whine and moan about how the taxpayers are no longer willing to finance stupidity.

Well, tough shit.

They're (we're) tired of it and it's time for the stupid to start being punished instead of coddled.

How does one get elected president of such an organization? Are votes based on who is most fabulous? Most popular in the Phys. Ed. locker room between classes? Who bakes the bestest snickerdoodles in Home Economics?

Or in the case of a straight guy, is it the one who spends the most time "enjoying chillin' with his gay buds" and discussing who has the tightest buns on the varsity team? Goes shopping with them for Ricky Martin CDs. The one who's really willing to "get down with the struggle" over allowing guys to wear Donna Karan knockoffs to the Prom?

Just one of those jobs that make you go, "Hmmmm.'
