THIS is how you deal with right wing sexist attacks on your candidacy:
 Krystal Ball, the 28-year-old Virginia Congressional candidate whose embarrassing private photos were dug up by a right-wing blog and posted on the internet, released the public statement today of my feminist wet dreams.

"I don’t believe these pictures were posted with a desire to just embarrass me; they wanted me to feel like a whore. They wanted me to collapse in a ball of embarrassment and to hang my head in shame. After all, when you are a woman named Krystal Ball, 28 years old, running for Congress, well, you get the picture. Stripper. Porn star. I’ve heard them all.

Who cares if, at 22, she took a couple goofy photos at a Christmas party where her ex-husband was wearing a red dildo on his nose and she put her mouth on the fake peen? Dirty politicians, that’s who. “The tactic of making female politicians into whores is nothing new,” Ball wrote. “Society has to accept that women of my generation have sexual lives that are going to leak into the public sphere. Sooner or later, this is a reality that has to be faced, or many young women in my generation will not be able to run for office.”

1. If the gentleman pictured had run for office, I am sure the photo would have been dug up by
 his opponent.

She is right about women who work toward power being made into whores, this is nothing new and I am glad she said it. But we are going to be seeing social networking backlash against ALL candidates in the coming years as my generation (which includes Ms. Ball) starts to run for office.

But be realistic: a lot of us have compromising photos taken of us at some point in our youth. Those moments should not have to define us entirely. Don’t equate the level of judgment we show at a Christmas party with friends — especially after a few glasses of punch — with the same judgment we’d show on the job. If I were a voter in Virginia, I wouldn’t particularly care about the Ball pics. So what if she’s got a sense of humor? She’s not hurting anyone.
