Hey there!
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:54:17 AM »
Nice to meet you all!

My name is Mel, I'm 21, from Canada (thankfully Alberta) and a politics student. I thought it'd be nice to talk to some politically like-minded people on the internet. I enjoy reading, shopping, going out with friends current events, skiing, travel and I love watching hockey. Politically I am more fiscally conservative than socially, as I support same-sex marriage for example. I hope you Americans manage to get rid of Obama this November!

I'd say I'm more of a social moderate, I support LGBT rights as I see it as an expanding of traditions such as marriage and family values to disenfranchised groups.

I am a social conservative - I don't agree with Gay Marriage, but do support civil unions.

I support civil marriage, as I don't see what's wrong with a secular marriage, whereas I don't believe same-sex couples should be able to infringe religious freedoms, unless the place of worship is in favour of performing same-sex marriage ceremonies.

@EagleKeeper: Thank you!

I support Civil Marriage also, as long as it is between one man and one women.

And yes, if the church doesn't want to conduct a same sex marriage, they shouldn't be forced to. Which is what the gay community has been trying to do.

To each their own I suppose.

I think that's morally wrong for gay couples to force their views on places of worship, everybody needs to reach a middle ground. I personally don't understand why people won't let gays get married, Canada hasn't fallen apart since we legalised same-sex marriage.

The reason why people don't let gays get married is because it is morally wrong. According to the bible, it is an abomination. I'm not sure if you are religious or not. But if you read the bible, you will see why it is the way it is.

I'm agnostic, to me it seems a bit hypocritical for those who support the idea of small government to get the government to tell people what they can and can't do.

The government forbids people from killing each other.  The government forbids people from stealing from each other.

Well, when it comes to gay marriage. I do feel the states should decide what to do with it. Let the people of the state vote on it. You have to also look at it like this. There are six states in the US here who recognize gay marriage, but the federal government does not. So when a partners spouse dies. The surviving partner will not be getting any of the federal benefits from the deceased, like Social Security and such.

Also, if you look at the states who let the citizens vote on whether to allow gay marriage, the citizens always vote against it.

Those are completely different to same-sex marriage, both  murder and theft directly harm people, whereas two people of the same gender getting married won't harm anybody.

@Kyle Ricky: I see no problem with states deciding on it, if the voters of a state decide to reject it, that's just democracy in action.

Welcome to the forum. Glad you are here. I hope your stay is long and prosperous.
have you given much thought to "everybody needs to reach a middle ground" ?

I have indeed, I believe a middle ground would be better, so not to infringe on religious freedoms and also not to discriminate against homosexuals.

Who is "everybody" ? Who decides what the "middle ground" is ? What does "need" mean ? You are 21, probably somewhat idealist, as you see idealism. If your life becomes a truly worthwhile one, you will believe something you will never compromise on. When you meet on middle ground, everyone is dissatisfied, some rightfully so.

Everybody being the population of a region/nation that is debating the legalisation of same-sex marriage, a middle ground being something that leaves everybody reasonably satisfied. I do believe in things that I won't ever compromise on, such as support for low taxation, being opposed to Quebec sovereignty and government subsidies of fossil fuels. I don't see what is wrong with a small amount of idealism, what would be wrong with granting homosexual couples civil marriage, but not religious ceremonies?

We should probably start a new thread, and not mess up your intro thread.

Welcome, there are many views here on different issues. I don't have a problem with gay people being married but it should never be forced on religion to regognize or marry same sex couples.  You will get pushback from those that don't agree with you, just discuss it with them and don't run away.
