Title: Broadcasting from behind the Iron Curtain
Post by: Kunabi on February 03, 2013, 02:55:42 PM
John has a long mustache.

I've been lurking here for a while. I live in Vermont, surrounded by organic liberal pod people. We moved here because there was a nursing shortage and my wife was looking for work. So now here we are, hoping to get out soon. I had no idea Vermont was literally Socialist. Guess I should have done my homework. At least we can carry guns here.

Anyway, as my carcass slowly hardens in the amber of liberalism, I enjoy reading this forum, especially your take on the DUmmies over at that liberal joint. I used to go there myself whenever I ran out of antifreeze to drink, but now I don't have to. I can get the greatest hits from like-minded Conservatives right here.

I served in the Army, then spent 13 years as a police officer in a major US city. I got sick of having to defend the Constitution within my own occupation - I am what they call an "originalist", I think... I believe the Constitution should be interpreted through the lens of the framers' intent when they wrote it, extrapolated to modern application but unchanged in meaning (i.e. "arms" means "arms", not "muskets" and "speech" includes the internet, not just shouting in the town square).

I oppose the federal war on drugs and the militarization of law enforcement for the purposes of conducting no-knock warrants for marijuana. I don't support legalizing drugs, I just think federal involvement has gotten out of control, and having seen it from the inside as a police officer I can say that some of my co-workers were a little too excited to bust in a door and get some trigger time. There was also a great deal of colorful, creative writing in some of the affidavits for search warrants I have seen, and a complete lack of knowledge of the Fourth Amendment among my fellow officers. If that's my Libertarian streak, I think that's about as Libertarian as I get.

I am not particularly religious, but I believe America was founded by men who believed in God and that that belief is the most important underpinning of our society. In my opinion, Christian ideology was the bedrock upon which our unalienable rights were first pondered to exist, as they were (and are) thought to come from a creator, not bestowed upon us by men or laws. That transcendent derivation of rights is what made us American and has kept us a free people for so long.

Looking up at my post, I see I've rambled incoherently, so I'll stop there. Thanks for making this forum available and for all of you coming together like this. I look forward to being here with a screen name from now on instead of lurking like a Peeping Tom. It felt skeevy, to be honest.  :naughty:

Welcome from Texas.  We could use some more conservatives down here to offset the commies moving here to avoid paying their fair share.

Welcome  from Kansas, from another Constitutional libertarian, Army Veteran, ex-cop, and armed citizen. I am also a Deist, Stoic, and biker.

Just for the record, Kunabi is not my sock puppet.  :-)

What are your opinions on bourbon, cigars, and redheads?

I'm a Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch kind of guy, on the extremely rare occasion I drink (not counting a nice red wine with a thick steak) but I do enjoy Jim Beam flavored sunflower seeds (yes, those are real!). I have enjoyed many a good cigar after a mission in the Army, but I haven't had one in a long time. I'd sure like to, though. As far as redheads go, my wife's in the room so I'll abstain from comment.  :-)

I'm also a fan of the Springfield XD for concealed carry, and the single redeeming quality of Vermont is its constitutional carry doctrine, in which no permit is required to carry openly or concealed.

See, everyone, he's not my sock monkey!  :-)

Red wine with steak isn't drinking, it's a side dish.

I like good Scotch, Irish, or rye whisky, but bourbon is my drink of choice. WL Weller Special Reserve or Buffalo Trace. I have one or two a week with a good cigar. I'll have to track down the sunflower seeds.

I am also a Springfield Armory fan. I carry a Loaded Champion for EDC, although I am working on an S&W .357 which may take its place. The Springer may become my barbecue gun for awhile.

Kansas recently moved to the right (moderate Republicans who compromised with our Democrat minority were replaced by conservatives), and there is word Constitutional carry will be introduced in this legislative session.

Welcome, Kunabi, and thank you for your service at multiple levels.

I spent some time in Vermont back in the mid-Seventies. It wasn't quite as rabidly moonbat then as now, I would imagine.

Do you think they put it in the water? Or is the Kool-Aid imported from San Fransicko?

Welcome from northern New York.  Our political climate up here is purple.  We voted for Romney, but put our D congresscreep back into office with a margin of 50.3% or something stupid.

Glad to have you here, we have a good time!

I believe it's in the maple syrup. Any place that can elect Bernie Sanders has been poisoned in some way, and syrup would be the most effective means here.

Welcome from your neighbor on the other side of the CT River.  WAY on the other side of the river.

And yeah, I'm thinking the syrup has something to do with it.  I don't eat pancakes (much) and I'm pretty conservative, so that's got something to do with it.  The girlfriend (Scoobie, she's around here somewhere) and I did a weekend trip to Woodstock last August.  To say that the people there were a bunch of flatlander stuck-up pretentious assholes would be kind.  And those were the LOCALS.
