Have to jump in here. Rockingham County Jail in New Hampshire has had one family member, her EX husband, My boss's husband and a neighbor working there.
This is not a fun job but people stay with it for the State Retirement. Of all these people 3 were guards one female.
The female was very interesting, she had Associates degrees in 3-4 different States, worked in prisons and County Jails all up and down the Eastern Seaboard. She also had a PI license in the States she worked in.
She was in body frame just a bit smaller then some of the male guards, perhaps 5'8---140 pounds-----very attractive.
Her Job was just a job, she was to maintain order in the place and she had to do so with no expected backup just because she was a woman.
She and all guards could not carry on duty, only re strengths were some thumb cuffs. She was very closed mouthed about the Guests she had to watch, but occasionally she would mention someone that had come to visit a few years ago, their attitude and problems they caused.
The female appearance at our jails for some reason seem to calm the prisoners, majority of injuries were to the male guards, any prisoner that harmed a female guard was not looked on too fondly by the others that needed a bit of a woman in their lives even if they were guards.
Last I heard she moved and went into social work in a big city. Bad choice, she was stabbed, shoulder dislocated all in 6 months. She was much more safer working in the prison system then on the streets.
Woman have a big role to play in law enforcement, put the Social Service onto the Men, big bruisers that can carry on their job.
