I've done this twice. Once the thing was in a front pocket as I leaned over the dog's water dish and in it went. Last night I forget the damn thing was in a jeans pocket. I threw the jeans in the washer and didn't discover I'd done so until the wash cycle had completed. When I fished it out of the washer the thing was vibrating like crazy.
The phone is ruined and I have a backup, but was worried about the SIM card. I was told to take it out and let it sit, completely covered, in a cup of dry rice over night to remove the moisture. I was afraid it'd been fried by the battery, but it's working beautifully in my backup phone.
Everybody here probably already knows this, but it was welcome news to me.

I have dropped a phone in the dog's water dish the same way.
Always remove the battery immediately, then use a low heat source for drying everything out. I've used a hair dryer set on low and also the defroster in the car.
