Must be a sale or coupon price.  Or it MIGHT be because you're in Texas.

By the time they drive the beef up here with diesel prices today, three bucks a pound sounds about right.

It's in the advertisements as this weekend sales, which are way cheaper than they have been.   I don't like buying that roll meat.  Gotta see my meat before I buy it.   :whatever:   Pork loin chops are on sale for 1.99/lb, and drumsticks are on sale for .99/lb.  Super great time for my freezer to go out.  :thatsright:

I don't care for drumsticks... I prefer thighs and they're just as cheap.  Slap 'em in the oven, come back in 10 minutes, and they're done.  I'm all about convenience.

I bought my pork loins when they were 99 cents a pound.  I still have one in the freezer.

Leg quarters are usually cheaper than either thighs or drumsticks for some reason. All of those are usually cheaper than wings though.   :banghead:

I just called a local meat processing plant.

Price for beef, processed from the side, is currently $2.69 per pound, hanging weight.

A half of a half of a steer goes for about $450 and a half a steer goes anywhere from $850-900.

I asked the gal how the prices have been of late, and she said pretty steady - but that rumor has it that prices will rise.

Based on that, it doesn't sound to me like ranchers are dumping their steers on the market - the cost of beef is still pretty damned high.  :o

Oh, they are.

There's hardly any cattle around here any more.

And a couple of weeks ago, there was front-page story in the Omaha World-Herald about a cattle producer in your own neck of the woods, sir, northern Missouri, who was compelled to dump thousands of heads on the market prematurely because of the drought.

Okay, fair enough, but that hasn't had a huge impact on the price of beef, evidently.

It might be too early; supply and price don't always move in tandem.

And one could argue that the price has actually already declined, when compared with the inflation in all other goods (i.e., a steady price might actually be a "decline," because the cost of everything else has increased).

I dunno.

One phenomenon I've noticed--such as the meat section of both the grocery store with the marqee in front, and the more hoi polloi Hy-Vee--is that it seems there's considerably more "shelf space" devoted to hamburger than there used to be.

True - but then why would the gal tell me that beef prices are expected to rise?

Beef futures have fallen slightly, but still not significantly.

I'm no cattle guy, of course, but there seem to be a lot of variables here at work, not just whether or not a few ranchers dumped their cattle on the market. Increased rain has eased things a little bit, apparently.

You're exactly right, Eupher; there's a lot of variables in economics.

That's why economics is such an inexact science (to put it mildly).

Economics generally considers only six or half a dozen known-and-measurable variables, when in fact in real life what happens is caused by millions of variables, a single one of which can alter the case considerably.

For me, economics is fun, but no more than that.

Well, beyond the usual supply and demand curve and the crap I was fed a long time ago vis a vis John Maynard Keynes, I don't know enough about economics to even be dangerous.

$3.09/lb for 75% lean.  What is really messed up is the chicken prices. Thighs, drumsticks and split breasts were all $1.89/lb but wings were $2.29/lb.   I'm glad I don't buy wings.

Semi-boneless ribeyes were on sale @ $6.99/lb.

but that rumor has it that prices will rise.

She was trying to get you to "buy"

They are keeping the price high because everyone is buying expecting higher prices later, causing an early demand now.

Yeah, I thought about that, but checked out the market analysis anyway to see if she was doing her bit to bring in biz or if she was correct.

I tend to think prices will rise, especially later in the fall. They're already ridiculous, but they'll get even stupider.

"Semi-boneless."

WTF? It's either boneless or it's not. The majority of marketing practices suck the big one.

Bought some ground chuck, 80% lean for $3.09/lb on sale.  The wife is making stuffed pasta shells this weekend.
