Mistakes, misunderstandings, and trolling
« on: May 24, 2012, 05:04:51 PM »
I think that in case of an actual mistake, the sooner there is a self-delete, the better.  Would it be possible to have an official button for accusing somebody of trolling?  Suppose that two or three people clicked the button instead of posting replies.  After all, an actual troll doesn't want to merely elicit a few button clicks.  Two or three people clicking the "I suspect that this post is a trolling attempt" button could cause the author of the post to see that it has been identified as such, and the author could have an opportunity to self-delete the post.  There would be no time limitation.  Obviously, sooner is better than later.  However, a little late is better than much later.

In case it has escaped your notice, trolls don't care if they are called out for being such.  They aren't concerned about their popularity on a message board.  They are only interested in getting a rise out of as many folks as they can.

A troll button simply won't work.

The way the board is set up now allows us to effectively handle things.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Everybody makes mistakes, and one possible mistake is a false positive: labeling as a trolling post something that was actually a mistake.  My proposal is an attempt to help people who don't want to troll, but who have inadvertently done something that others believe to be trolling.  They could self-delete, and avoid further damage to their reputation.  Such self-deleting would also prevent some people from seeing what they would otherwise see and be annoyed by.

What part of "they don't care about their reputation" are you failing to understand?

You obviously aren't posting using your real name, do you really care about the reputation of your message board persona(s)?

Don't be absurd.

Speaking of trolling.....  You appear to be doing it.

A computer said this to me:

You can't report your own post to the moderator, that doesn't make sense!
Now, I don't want to argue with a computer, but I think that it might make sense in some cases.

Do you authorize the transfer of +265 reputation points from rich_t to Boojatta?  Just to be clear, the negative reputation points of rich_t won't be changed, and won't be transferred to Boojatta.

No, DU is intolerant.  Are you a member of CC's plainclothes MIR team?  I imagine that somebody could see me as an intruder here.  I was surprised to discover after six years and 12,000 posts at DU that I was intruding there.

From another thread:
We are far more tolerant here than you encountered at the DUmp. You could even criticize Republicans here with no fear of anything more than a bitch-slap to your rep (which doesn't matter in the end as even friendly bitch-slaps are sometimes given). There is no walking on egg shells in this forum unlike the DU or even the formerly great, and now not so great Hannity forums.

Self-deleting posts can get out of hand. I've seen entire threads disappear (on another forum) because somebody decided they were going to wipe out their existence.

I think the way it's set up here is the way to go. You get a finite period of time to edit and/or delete what you've written. Not sure what that is -- maybe an hour. After that, you gotta leave it the way it is, warts and all.

The mods do a good job determining what an harmless mistake is versus trolling. Extra buttons and geegaws ain't gonna make that problem any easier to deal with.

It took my years here at CC to learn that when a Southern belle says "bless your heart," it is the same as a Philly girl saying "Go Eff Yourself."

There used to be something like that, but they prohibited specific books, rather than simply announcing that, for specified authors, all future writings by that author are prohibited.  The number 20 sounds rather arbitrary.  I would think that you would want to demonstrate that some clearly specified rules were actually violated rather than merely demonstrating that somebody is presently unpopular.

The Index Librorum Prohibitorum (English: List of Prohibited Books) was a list of publications prohibited by the Catholic Church.

Quote
In 2002, a retired Roman Catholic bishop gave his personal approval to the writings of Maria Valtorta, which had been on the Index (though never in a printed edition) and which have still not been given official Church approval.[13][14] Mary Faustina Kowalska, whose writings were likewise forbidden, was canonized in 2000,[15][16] and Antonio Rosmini-Serbati, one of whose works was on the Index, was beatified in 2007.

Thanks for the latin lesson. No one here has ever had any exposure to that language. It's not like professionals like doctors or lawyers have to be fluent in it.
