UNITED NATIONS (May 3) -- The U.S. delegation walked out of a United Nations conference on nuclear nonproliferation during a speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in which he asserted Iran's right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes and slammed Western powers, especially the U.S., for allowing Israel to maintain undeclared nuclear weapons.
"One of the gravest injustices committed by the nuclear weapon states is equating nuclear arms with nuclear energy," Ahmadinejad told the gathered delegates. "As a matter of fact, they want to monopolize both the nuclear weapons and peaceful nuclear energy."

The U.S. delegation filed out of their seats in the hall of the U.N. General Assembly a little less than halfway through Ahmadinejad's 35-minute speech.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to take the podium later in the afternoon with what is expected to be a spirited rejoinder to Ahmadinejad's remarks. On Sunday she said, "We're not going to permit Iran to change the story from their failure to comply."
