1. My view

My view: I want the Cuban people to have a real choice in their future -- therefore I oppose the 55-year U.S. government policy of economic blockade, terrorism, sabotage, assassination, and destabilization. The U.S. should immediately end its attack and pay reparations.

I hope we all support democracy in Cuba. That means we should stop supporting U.S. attempts to commit acts of war on Cuba.

They don't know the difference between embargo and blockade, apparently.  Idiots.

I'm in favor of ending it, myself, though because of the Cuban vote in the pivotal electoral state of Florida, it's always been a no-go for both parties.  My reasons are rather different from those the DUmmies would cite, though; I think there's no quicker way to unwind Communism than to expose the subject populace directly to the full benefits of a Western consumer economy.

Ditto.

We should have done the same thing with Vietnam. After the French retired with a case of Dien Bien Flu we should have waited and made a trade partner of Vietnam. Especially with China grating on their nerves now I think we have an excellent opportunity to flip the scrappy l'il bastards to our side (if we had someone smart and/or pro-US in the exec branch).

It started a few years ago. On Bourdain's No Reservations, Cuba, he showed the big, posh hotels and restaurants being built. At that time (2011) he commented that no Cuban could or would be able to afford to go into any of the "new" parts of Havana.

However, I think, just like Hong Kong, the cats been let out of the bag.

They trade with France, Spain, Canada, China, and even the U.S. It's not the embargo that's holding Cuban's down; it's the assholes running the country. If we opened up total trade with Cuba, there isn't anything that says they'll loosen the shackles on their people.

Minus the emotional invective, that's why neither party will touch it.  That and the 'Saint JFK' factor for the Democrats. 

My own opinion is that open trade would be as irresistible a force on Cuba as the gravity well of Jupiter is on its moons.  Investment from little players like Eurozone countries or Canada is not even remotely in the same league.
