Requiring a "knockout" is setting the bar impossibly high.  I assume the whole point of setting this as the
standard is to doom any possibility that mccain could be considered to have "won" the debate.

but having watched the first presidential debate and the VP debate, I seriously wonder if The BarackStar!
could commit murder on stage during the debate and still "win" the damn thing.

McCain Needs Knockout in Second Debate, Political Analysts Say

John McCain has to press his "home field" advantage in a town hall meeting while Barack Obama will try to maintain the momentum he's gained from the recent financial crisis when they engage in Round 2 of the presidential debates Tuesday night, political analysts say.

The candidates will meet at Belmont University in Nashville in the second of three debates at 9 p.m. ET. The debate, to be moderated by NBC's Tom Brokaw and broadcast on all major network and cable news channels, will feature questions from voters in the audience and on the Internet.

The town hall setting is expected to play to McCain's strengths. In fact, he lobbied Obama over the summer to debate him in a series of town hall meetings, but the Democratic candidate declined. Now McCain is getting his shot, and it couldn't  come at a better time.

"McCain has to make some progress," said Charles Jones, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin and a senior fellow at Brookings Institution. "Everything is on him, really, because Obama is in the lead. Not only in the lead, but a comfortable lead if you can believe the trend in the polls."

A FOX News/Rasmussen Reports Poll released this week has Obama leading McCain in the battleground states of Florida, Colorado, Missouri and Virginia by as much as 7 percentage points. McCain holds a 1-point lead in Ohio, according to the poll.

Obama could be reduced to a crying blob of jelly without McCain ever raising his voice, and the best press McCain would get out of it would the press calling it a tie 'despite a couple of rough patches for each of them.'

I think McCain does need a knock-out, even a TKO.

He needs to hammer Obama on Fannie Mae, Ayers and Wright and not settle for the inevitable passing dismissal from Obama. He needs to make Obama: A) crack and lose his temper or B) be shown to be so evasive/lying as to be transparent.

He needs to do this precisely because The Comiteriat is writing the news. It has to be so obvious that Matthews, Olbermann and the rest can't dismiss it either. Sure, they'll call it racism etc but if it is obvious enough the indies will see past all that.

McCain needs to hit and hit hard. Obama's camp is refusing to answer direct questions, now it's time to hit Obama himself. He will evade, he will prevaricate, he will outright lie; but he cannot under any circumstances be allowed to get away with it on national TV because the viewers are not going to follow-up on the internet tomorrow.

agreed - the thing working against McCain is the format of this debate - town-hall style is his wheelhouse, however it isnt a format that lends itself easily to confrontation. McCain is going to have to make it confrontational anyway. The danger is that the manuever will earn him votes, or lose it altogether. there will be no 'ties' in the eyes of the voters.

Whenever I see Tom Brokaw I can only think of his Simpsons TV show character.    :-)
