IdaBriggs is a rival to Beth as being one of the most stupid people on the internet.

Michigan Auto Insurance - WTF???

From the headline (and my profile) you can tell I live in Michigan. We are in our 40s, and have good driving records. My husband's employer provides a decent quality medical insurance.

My husband and I have two cars and thankfully both are "paid off." One is a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, and the other is a 2006 Pontiac Vibe. Both have over 100,000 miles on them. We have "PL/PD" ("Personal Liability/Property Damage") and "Comprehensive" (hit a deer/tree falls on them) insurance, and pay "monthly" premiums. This time last year that premium was $140 per month for both cars, with a $500 deductible. (This translated to $1,680 per year for two old cars.)

In August of last year our rates went up by $50 per month. (That means they went up $600 per year.) I contacted our agent, increased our deductible to $1,000, modified a few "options" and got it down to $25 more per month. (That meant $300 per year, with monthly payments of $165 per month.)

This month it went up *AGAIN*. We are now at $220 per month. That is a $55 per month increase, also known as $660 per year.

We have had no claims, or tickets. I called the agent, and was told Michigan had "mandated" these increases. I am a cynical sort, and made a couple of phone calls to other agents (all of whom were able to pull up our records to see we are insured).

The "best" rate I was able to get quoted was for $235 per month (wtf!), which translates to $2,820 per year. Per the woman quoting, $1,898 annually (or $949 per six month period) is for "lifetime coverage of medical expenses" to be coordinated with our medical insurer in case of a "serious" accident. The other $942 annually (or $471 per six month period) is actually the "PL/PD" coverage on our cars.

Michigan auto insurance rates going up

Michigan motorists will pay $20 more per vehicle for unlimited medical coverage in their auto policies, $104.58 to $124.89 effective July 1, the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association decided Monday.

The MCCA, created in 1978, is a risk pool that reimburses auto insurers for medical and long-term disability claims that exceed $460,000. In a statement, the association said "the assessment increased this year primarily because investment returns decreased during the last year while claim costs continued to increase."

Michigan is the only state with unlimited lifetime medical coverage for auto accident victims. In most states, health coverage is optional. In states where coverage is mandated, New York has the highest coverage limit, $50,000.

In 2008, when the stock markets tanked by more than 40 percent, the MCCA paid out $724 million in claims costs. The new $124 assessment includes $101 to handle claims and $24 to address an estimated deficit of $2.2 billion, or nearly $323 per insured vehicle. The assessment was highest in 2005 when it was set at more than $141 per vehicle. Since 1979, there have more than 23,100 claims. The MCCA expects to receive 1,050 new claims during the upcoming period from July 1 through June 30, 2010.

Auto Insurance Rates Going Up At Least $30

Michigan drivers will pay $30 more for auto insurance starting July 1 to care for accident victims who have brain damage, paralysis or other catastrophic injuries, raising the annual fee to $175 per vehicle.

The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association announced the 21 percent premium increase Friday.

Lawmakers are discussing bills that would allow motorists to choose among various levels of personal injury protection coverage, rather than mandating uncapped coverage. Opponents say that wouldn't guarantee lower rates.

Regular auto insurance policies handle coverage up to $500,000, after which all insured motorists are assessed the additional fee to cover more severe cases.

The association covers medical bills for roughly 12,800 accident victims across the state. Last year it paid out $927 million in claims resulting from catastrophic injuries.

May I politely point out that $175 per vehicle is NOT "$1,898 annually (or $949 per six month period)" -- and a google/search on the state's website isn't helping *at all* -- http://www.michigan.gov/lara/0,4601,7-154-35299_10555_13222_13224-66774--,00.html

And now, I just went on line to "Progressive", typed in the information, and received a quot for $163 per month, which is cheaper yet - what is going on here? Anybody have a clue???

Thanks in advance!!!

Anyone think this...

"Michigan is the only state with unlimited lifetime medical coverage for auto accident victims.

...might have something to do with it.

Let's see:  Money lost as markets went down; upcoming increased cost of medical expenses due to Obamacare being fully implemented in 2014; 12,800 accident victims resulting in $927 million paid out in claims resulting from catastrophic injuries; and unlimited lifetime medical coverage for auto accident victims.

Yeah, no reason to raise premiums with all that going on.  Healthcare is free!

Is Michigan one of the states that signed on to partner with the Feds on insurance exchanges for Obamacare?  I've heard it will cost the states a lot more money..maybe it has something to do with that?

I guess Ida hasn't heard of a little thing called "cause and effect".

Then again they aren't called DUmmies for nothing.

That is good news! Now if that could be applied to California and all the blue New England hellholes.

I hope their progressive legislatures are paying attention.

The problem with the Idiot Briggs primitive getting that designation is that unlike poor stupid Beth, she posts too rarely and too sporadically.  I wish she'd post more, lots more.

Uh, no.  Try again.  You SUCK as drivers if you're paying that much for two vehicles.

Also, didn't anyone tell you it's ****ING IDIOTIC to have full coverage on a vehicle that's paid off, meaning if you're paying more than 10 percent of the vehicle's value per year in insurance premium, best you just go to a liability-only?

Also, are you at state minimums or something reasonable, or are you on some idiotic thing like 500K/1M coverage?  I mean, I'm not at state minimum but I figure 100K/200K is enough, don't you, Ida?  And I'm willing to bet that I drive a bit more than you (my insurance knows I drive ~25K miles/year) and haven't had a ticket or accident in almost 8 years now, and yet I'm driving a new vehicle with full coverage and paying less than $65/month.

So couple that with that $4/gallon gas you so love to pay for, (after all, you supported the people keeping it up there) and all I can say to you is:

OWN IT!!!!

I'll bet the IdaBriggs DUmmie is one of those who supports driver's licenses for illegal aliens and open borders.

I'll bet the IdaBriggs DUmmie can't put two and two together to see that illegal aliens don't buy car insurance, drive drunk, and get in a lot of wrecks where peoples' cars and lives are ruined.  Ahhh, yes, that little section in your car insurance bill titled "uninsured motorist coverage?"  That's for your illegal alien friends and other DUmmies who don't think laws are for them.

Yep, IdaBriggs.

Guess we need to go over our insurance policy's with Prudential again.    I have never put in a claim in my life and hubby just once 30+ years ago for $500.00, but he has payroll deduction on 2 cars with all the bells and whistles.

Thanks for the heads up, both cars paid off and getting old, Jeep has 70,000 and KIA 50,000 miles and both 12 years old.     When we take the cars in for service we are allways asked if we walk or have another way of transportation.  Time to take a look at what we are really paying for, when money is taken from a pay check by deduction one tends to forgets to shop around.

Much like homeowners insurance, the original takes into consideration the cost of the original sale price, after 5 years the home may have increased in value but the original insurance stays the same.   Then there are the personal property issues, new expensive electronics or family heir looms brought into the home.

Are you storing items at a storage center ?   Best get a rider on home owners insurance to cover them.

We had outside of town a very secure high tec center that was the place to store valuables.  The price to store these items was 3 times the price of any other storage company in the area.   The wealthy stored art work, antiques and family memorabilia here.   The whole place went up in flames and millions of dollars were destroyed.     The storage company had insurance on THEIR property, land and buildings only.   The contract for all storage company's says you are responsible to get insurance on your property.

What a mess for those that lost 10's of thousands in that fire.   Their property was not insured by anyone.

I found that my car insurance would cover my camper and boats and trailer only as long as it was hooked up to the car, have to get extra insurance for when it is unhooked.

Hard to get or keep homeowners insurance if you have some breeds of dogs, insurance will not pay for damage done by a big long list of dog breeds.  Some company's cancel insurance if you own or have one on the property.

Insurance is tricky, even the banks that have that sign insured under the laws may not have paid their yearly dues and you are no longer insured, bank goes bust and may take years to get your money back.

Way back when I was a kid my parents bought insurance for me from a school program. If and only if I were injured or died due to a fault or responsibility of the school, say so much money if I cut my fingers off in shop class, then to get that money my parents had to prove the accident was not my fault.

Insurance bought at the airport in the 1980's time was a joke.   So you pay for a million dollars policy in case of a crash.   Insurance company's were going to court to devalue the amount do to age, and life ex-pencity.
They went hog wild into the medical records of the passengers to find any thing medical about them that could lower their life time, everything from kidney disease, to people with Aids.   Anyone over 55 was suspect.

Insurance, we have to have it and know what we are insured for.    Insurance company's do not like to pay out and will fight tooth and nail not to.

We have to read over our couraverage like we do medical insurance to find out what we are paying for and what is our responsibilities to do so.

I see a whole state of DUmmie drivers hunting for an accident and a lifetime of freebies.
