Here is the advice I'd feel compelled to give any young person

You better find a way to scratch and grab your way onto just a little bit of wealth and then you better be bloodthirsty in growing it because if you don't you will be left out on the the benefits this nation offers just as surly as the lowest caste in feudal India.

That is the way we're headed.

".....just as surly....."

7. a much better solution

learn to live simply and cheaply, be kind to your fellow humans, and try to be a good person. Learn some practical skills (a lot of young people do, surprisingly - they're not all the broad stereotype the media says they are).

3. And if you have some wealth....

...you will never be sure if people who surround you are seeking a bit of security through you or not.

I'm seeing that happen in two people I know. One is scared to death and seeking to attach to someone who inherited a lot of money.

5. Been told that before.

That is not a new idea.

That should not, nor do I think that is the way people should get money. Although I agree there is an intent to get people to think that way.

Just have a beer and not worry about money.

8. Mine: fuel cells

Preferably studying hydrogen fuel cells. They are always 10 to 15 years off in the future. You'll spend your entire 40 year career "studying" them, but you'll never be expected to produce anything! At least that is what it has been so far.

They find a new "treatment" almost every damn month. That's where the money is.

There is no Health Care in the US, only sick care. If we cured you we would lose a lifetime of profit.

18. Couldn't agree with you more. Everytime I go to the grocery store the cashier always asks me if I want to donate to the "research of the day" and I always say when they find a cure FOR ANYTHING, I will start donating again, but if we continue to pay them to look for it they ain't never gonna find it. You're right; treatment is far more lucrative for them than a cure.

Huh? ?

I don't mean to go off-topic, especially on a thread I myself put here, but anyway.....

I thought of the mountain man primitive, who lives in West Virginia, when I was buying cigarettes last night at a convenience store.

Next to the cash-register, there was a jar of strips of beef jerky.

(I don't do jerky myself, which comes from cattle raised in Oklahoma and Texas; I do only real beef, which comes from cattle raised in Nebraska.)

The label on the jar advertised "not your city-slicker jerky."

I noticed the beef jerky was made in.....West Virginia.

Now I'm wondering; what could people in West Virginia, an eastern state known more for coal and manufacturing than for agriculture, possibly know about beef?  As I mentioned to the customer behind me, it's sort of like borscht being made in Japan.

Hey Frank, are you sure you didn't just take a casual glance and mistake "bear jerky" for beef jerky?

We make great jerky here in West by God Virgina Frank. Beef and venison. West by God Virginia has more farmers than most people realize. Not the big farms mind you, we are talking small farms here. I'll take WV beef over Nebraska beef any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I don't even buy beef from the stores. I get it from the guy that bought grandad's farm when he died. No grain fed, antibiotics loaded, growth hormones beef here. Just natural home grown Black Angus beef.

Reminds me...back when I was a kid, of 10 or so in 1970, my dad picked up a free Marlboro Man Cookbook with 15 recipes from the locally owned store. One recipe was for trail chili cooked in a cast iron Dutch Oven. Dad made the chili and biscuits which in their uncooked dough state, were packed in the Dutch oven on top of the chili. After spending a day fishing while the mothers were nursing a campfire along the Big Lost River in Mackay, ID, dad would drop the Dutch oven concoction in a foot-deep bed of coals in the fire and use a shovel to place 6" of coals on top of the Dutch oven. Dad had an asbestos glove he used to pull the Dutch oven out from the fire after about three beers of cooking time ( 1 hour).

I would have to type for three days to describe the incredible taste involved.

P.S. Do NOT buy Lodge cast iron cooking gear! You can get the same quality gear in the camping section of your local BiMart for 30% of the cost!!

Dutch ovens are great. We used to do chili or spaghetti sauce in them back in my boy scout days. Bury them in a hole in the ground with the hot coals and 6 hours later we had the greatest chili or spaghetti sauce known to mankind. Not to mention cooking bacon, sausage, eggs and corned beef hash in a cast iron skillet over an open fire.

Makes me hungry just thinking about it!
