Probably a reference to Taylor Morris.

I lifted this from the text of his speech:

And I think about the young sailor I met at Walter Reed hospital, still recovering from a grenade attack that would cause him to have his leg amputated above the knee. Six months ago, I would watch him walk into a White House dinner honoring those who served in Iraq, tall and twenty pounds heavier, dashing in his uniform, with a big grin on his face; sturdy on his new leg. And I remember how a few months after that I would watch him on a bicycle, racing with his fellow wounded warriors on a sparkling spring day, inspiring other heroes who had just begun the hard path he had traveled.

He gives me hope.

Taylor Morris sustained injuries to all four limbs, entailing loss of both legs, left arm from the bicep down, and right hand.  I don't think he was talking about Taylor Morris and for what it's worth, I think the reference was completely made up.

Why is that funny?

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center provides advanced medical care and rehabilitation for members of all Services, including Sailors.

SEALs, Navy corpsmen and chaplains deploy into combat zones, and have been injured or killed in IED, rocket, mortar, and grenade attacks. Sailors went through pre-deployment training at Ft Riley before deploying with Army teams; they could have been injured as well.

Okay, so you don't believe Obama, fine.  But do you now see that yes, sailors can be hurt by roadside attacks or do you still think it's funny?

I'm a veteran.  I don't think ANY servicemember getting wounded or killed is funny.  What though was funny was that Barack Obama, who knows about as much about combat as he does about astrophysics, would use those particular words.

FWIW I bet my bottom dollar no one could ever find the Sailor he was talking about because I think he was lying.

Fair enough, if his lips are moving he's probably lying.  However there have been and are plenty of Sailors on the ground, not just the SEALS - mainly corpsmen and other medical personnel, SeaBees, law enforcement series, aviation rates. transportation people.  Grenade injuries are kind of unusual, but Obama is a complete moron on anything military (Or economic, but that's another story) and he was probably talking about an RPG casualty but doesn't know WTF an RPG rally is.

That's the most plausible explanation.  I know there are other Navy personnel on the ground in combat areas.  I was an Airframer back in the day.  Coming out of his mouth though, it just seemed so made up.  I'd bet my bottom dollar I'm not the only person who felt that way.

He would lie when the truth would do better.

He'd rather climb a greased 40 foot light pole backwards and tell a lie on credit than to stand flatfooted on the ground and tell the truth for cash.

Huge chunks of Barry's so-called "memoirs" - both volumes - also stretch the truth and incorporate drama for the singular purpose of making him look a whole lot more palatable than he actually is.

Barry's speeches draw from that experience.

Far be it for me to defend the Narcissist-in-Chief but...

...he may have been encapsulating his remarks for his audience. I'm full-time military and on those occasions I write to the entire forum--even in the military sub-forum--I leave out details, avoid commonly used acronyms, etc so as to make my post more accessible for those unfamiliar with the military.

On the flip-side: if Obama had larded-up his speech with jargon and small details he would have come off as being phonier than usual.

That being said: while I think Obama may appreciate personal sacrifice and triumph I think overall as a CINC he is far too detached and disengaged to be effective. I think the war is just a motion he goes through to avoid appearing weak; leaving the actual details to a military staff that must win to fight without gaining negative headlines and being overly sensitive to political winds to the point of near paralysis.

In other words, Obama is spending the lives of US servicemembers to hold on to 3 points when in reality it interferes with his golfing time.

So, in that your initial assessment is essentially correct.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."
