I'm Quitting
« on: July 01, 2010, 06:31:30 PM »
Smoking, that is. I have one cigarette left. When that burns out, I'm done. I've thought about it many times, but this is it. It's unhealthy, yes, but the main reason I'm quitting is to stay fit for one, and because of finances. The latter would be the most pressing. I barely make it month to month as is. It's more than seven bucks a pack. I figure I'll save a shitload of dough, and get my wind/stamina back. Win/Win.

The only reason I'm posting about it is because I feel it'll be cathartic to come on here and make a post whenever I feel I need one. What is it? 5-6 days is the hardest part of the journey? Also, I have a fair bit of Mountain Dew I can crack open to ease the pain.

Anyway, wish me luck

I quit in March 2003 after years of 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day.
Have never been an anti smoking fanatic since but am so glad I finally did.

Once I got it into my mind I didn`t want to anymore it was surprisingly easy but be warned you will possibly always want one at a given moment.
It hasn`t been difficult to say no at those moments either.

Am sure it was hell on Earth for some but that was my experience.

I'm prepping for hell. And no, I'll never be one of those "reform smokers" I hated so much when I did smoke. I just smoked my LAST ONE 5 minutes ago. Let the pain begin...

Cigs in S.C. went up 50 cent a pack, or $5 a carton, today. Obama put an additional $7.40 a carton tax on them shortly after taking office.....name brand cigs were around $32 a carton...now approaching $40 a carton. That's a $12 tax increase in about a year.

The Muslims can now make money off them without shipping them north.

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

If I can survive through all the various surgeries, and things related to being visually impaired/hyrocephallic, I can survive this. I not only can do it, I WILL do it!

And no. I don't mind telling that shit. I have nothing to hide. Unlike greenbriar, I have no problems with honesty.

luck!!! It is hard. I quit for about 7 months. Started back. Only when I was serious about getting pregnant did I finally kick the habit. It was actually easy once I was pregnant. I was vomitting all day, and the last thing I wanted was a cig. But after delivering my baby, I still wanted one. It is something that stays with you. Be strong. You can overcome it.

I wish everyone here who smokes would quit. My mom had a serious scare a few years ago ( had to have a lung biopsy) and quit the day she saw her Xray. My aunt had three stints yesterday and she might lose her legs. Her doctor is going to do another angiogram in a month to get a better look at her arteries in her legs. Apparently you can only have so much dye in you system at once and they couldn't check her legs when they looked at other arteries.  She had a stint to her heart and two to her kidneys. She has also had several strokes. Her doctor said she had to quit smoking....she hasn't but told him she did.

Congratulations.  I quit in 1990 and while I can no longer stand the smell, I have refrained from becoming an anti-smoking fanatic

Good to know, Duke.

Sorry to hear about that, BEG. I certainly understand where you're coming from, however, I have attempted quitting before, and know how painfully hard it is. I can understand where your Aunt is coming from as well. I'm sending my most heartfel good wishes her way though. :)

I quit in 1979 after smoking for about 10 years, 1 pack a day roughly. I smoked a pipe (without inhaling) as a bit of a bridge, and chucked it after a month because smoking a pipe is such a PITA.

It took about 6 months for the cravings to go away completely.

It's to the point that I can't stand smelling the stuff. It literally makes me sick.

Rev, try to remember that millions of people have gone before you and millions have quit. It can be done! Change habits that lead to smoking (after a meal was a big one for me), and use a bridge if you must.

The first month is the worst, then it tapers off. It can still bite you after awhile, so you have to be on guard.

Good luck!

Your words are appreciated Eupher. I'm going to keep this thread in mind whenever I have a craving, because every piece of your guy's advice is invaluable. Thank you, everyone.

Though, I'd tried the bridge thing before, and it just doesn't seem to be for me. Tried cigars as a buffer before. Just went back. :(

I seriously hope you can do it. I'll be rooting for you.

My brother smokes and he reeks of smoke all the time. I don't understand why one person can smoke and you really can't smell it on them and then you have another person who smokes who you can literally taste an ashtray when they walk up to you. My brother is the ashtray person. It's nasty.

Never give in to the "just one" reward syndrome. It's never that, it's surrendering to smoking. You have to tell yourself every time you feel like a smoke; NO, I don't smoke anymore. Then live it.

I heard about that stuff, all the vivid dreams, and stuff. Not something I'd like to be taking. I may have to take advantave of Pizza Hut's Any pizza, any size, any crust deal though. I'm going to have to resist the usual "after the meal craving," though, so I'm full of indecision.

The meal deal IS tough but you can try brushing your teeth instead (if you don't already )

I'm the queen of "trying to quit" and can tell you tons of things that worked for me....temporarily.  Only the will to give them up for good has escaped me.

Wellbutrin or the nicotine version (forgot the name) works for most people also, although it's probably a lifetime medication for those of us that simply can't get past the craving.
