Wal-Mart worker dies after shoppers knock him down
« on: November 28, 2008, 12:54:18 PM »

Quote
NEW YORK – A worker was killed in the crush Friday after a throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains burst through the doors at a suburban Wal-Mart, authorities said.
At least four other people were injured, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island was closed.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.
"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. ... I literally had to fight people off my back."
Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. The man's name was not released and the cause of death was not immediately known.
Effin crazy people.

Now I know why I never go out on Black Friday.

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

Screw suing Walmart.  I'd sue everyone of those stupid ****ers who couldn't wait 5 damn seconds.  I don't see how Walmart could have been negligent in this.  The customers broke the doors down to get inside.  What are they supposed to do?  Set up a electric fence perimeter with attack dogs?

Hell they ran over two Fairfax Country police officers at the Wal mart I attempted to enter this morning.

I'll never do that EVER again.

Should have stuck to my original plan of just going to the PX.

Not only did the one man die, but they also injured a pregnant woman. There were initial reports about her baby being dead, but updates say that was wrong. These people should ALL be tried for Accessory to homicide. Every stinking one of them!!! I'm sorry, but shopping isn't THAT important !! They could have taken 15 secs to get these injured folks out of the way instead of trampling them !! What the hell is wrong with people today ?!?!?!?!?

Supposedly this herd also shoved the police officers who were  performing CPR on the victim....Also, WalMart has incidents of trampling every black Friday, this is the first time it resulted in a death though.  They are going to be sued for failing to provide barriers for this.  And hopefully, every senseless person who stomped on this victim gets charged for manslaughter.

WalMart's just gone to hell.  I don't know about the stores where you all live, but all the ones around me are just awful.  The superstores, that is.   Not that this is about the store per se, but about the customers responsible for killing someone over what..........?  Some cheap electronics?  Good deal on a coffee maker?   :(

I doubt they could be charged for manslaughter. There's no way to pin it on any one person.

Sweet Dee, the ones in Denison and Sherman are just awful. Denison is the worst of the two. I've been driving up to Durant, OK to go to Walmart any more. That store is pretty nice.

This isn't really surprising, only that it hasn't happened before.

I've worked in retail. Seen just how crazy our customers can be trying to "get the best deal". I really pitied the sales staff on those days and was glad I had a workshop to hermit into when the post Christmas / New years panic sales came on.

Those shoppers were like a pack of rabid rodents, throwing civilized behaviour right out the window.

There is a reason why I don't go anywhere near a retail store on Black Friday.

Too many f&cking idiots out there.

The Super Walmart in my area attracts the riff raff......I don't even know where these people come from as they do not live IN my area...I went a few times, but their deals just aren't worth my safety.  They always have police surveillance outside the store..which doesn't make it any more appealing in my eyes.
I wouldn't mind if they shut it down.

This season hasn't been warm and fuzzy in my parts.  A shopper was threagthened at gunpoint a few days ago at a local mall.  A gas attendant was shot and killed a few nights ago...A Best Buy had a smuggling ring today, as the strip mall that housed the Best Buy was shut down and surrounded by police.

It's just so nasty out there....I don't know if it's the decline of the economy or society as a whole is going off the steep end.  The Christmas spirit is slowly dying.... :(

That's what I'm talking about Hawk!  Sheesh!!  I don't even bother going anymore.

I don't see how Walmart could have been negligent in this.

Walmart is absolutely negligent for this.    They had a sign posted outside that stated "blitz line starts here."    It was also their dance, so they are more than liable for ensuring the safety of customers on their property.

I loathe Walmart, and find most of these stores to be dirty, disorganized, and just plain disgusting  (not all of them, but far too many of them around here).   I did however stand in line at one this morning at 4:30 a.m. (a clean super Walmart closer to Boston) as I love Black Friday shopping and have been enjoying it with my sisters and friends for many many years.     One of my sisters had a list of stuff she wanted to get at the Walmart doorbuster price so we went there first.   The line extended from the front of the building all the way to the back of the building.    The crowd was very festive and friendly -- as has been the case at most stores every year I go out, and when the doors opened the line moved into the building in a very orderly manner.   The Walmart staff handled the crowds perfectly -- no problems at all.

I ended up getting my husband a blue ray dvd player, my son a portable dvd player, and a toy for my twins that is sold out everywhere (Playskool Dance Cam), so it was all good forcing  myself to go to Walmart.

Black Friday shopping is a lot of fun.    Morons like this don't define the shopping experience -- especially given the area of Long Island this happened in.    The security should have been heightened from that alone.

Walmart is paying big for this, as they should.

This was very well said, former!  I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this walmart decline!  yikes!  I'm glad you had a good experience, and survived in one piece :)

I don't think walmart is liable for this any more than they should be liable for some moron running over a customer in the parking lot.  They should have cancelled the sales right then and there and had all of the shoppers arrested.  In fact they should have tasered every damn one of them kicked them in the freaking stupid heads and then arrested their pathetic asses.  I hope this gets this Black Friday shit canceled forever.  It isn't worth it when the American populace is this cold hearted and greedy.

By the way, the Walmart by my house is clean, well organized, and the staff is wonderful.  The only day I won't go there is crack check day when everyone gets their welfare payments and food stamps.

I worked retail for 10 years.  I can tell you stories that would blow your mind.  People lose at least 50 IQ points when they enter a store.  They act like inbred animals.

That's an interesting point!!  Couldn't they have had all of those people arrested?  I mean, they killed someone for crying out loud!!

I know for a fact that people were arrested for acting like retarded baboons at our local Walmart today.  Fist fighting over TVs.  Freaking morons.

There are security cameras all over the store, hundreds of them.  I know that they got their faces on video.  They should run that tape on TV over and over again until all of them are identified and arrested.

Agreed.  HUGE morons.  How embarrassing, fighting over tv's?  Wow!!

Hopefully some epic changes will be made, so this will never happen again.  i know so many people who shop on black friday with friends, to have some fun and because it's tradition.  So it really sucks that things like this can even happen!
