As one of the quotes in my signature block says, Esse quam videri. Latin for, "Deeds, not words," IIRC.
Very close in meaning, but the translation is
"To be, rather than to seem to be".
From Cicero, "Rare is the man who prefers to
be virtuous, rather than to
appear so." Machiavelli reversed it, and said that a successful ruler would
seem virtuous or strong, rather than actually
being so.
