The Daily 202: Will supporting reparations become a new litmus test for Democrats in 2020?

THE BIG IDEA: Barack Obama opposed reparations for the descendants of slavery when he ran for president. He warned the NAACP in 2007 that they would be used as “an excuse for some to say we’ve paid our debt and to avoid the much harder work” of enforcing anti-discrimination laws, improving public education, rehabilitating young men coming out of prisons and lifting people out of poverty.
In 2016, neither Hillary Clinton nor Bernie Sanders supported reparations for the black community as a redress for slavery. Even as he promised a revolution of democratic socialism that would include tuition-free college and Medicare-for-all, Sanders said paying reparations to African Americans was a bridge too far. “First of all, its likelihood of getting through Congress is nil,” he said. “Second of all, I think it would be very divisive.”
But this is not your father’s Democratic Party, and it’s not 2016 anymore.
Four declared Democratic presidential candidates have signaled support for some form of reparations to specifically benefit African Americans: Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Julián Castro and Marianne Williamson. This puts more pressure on the rest of the crowded field to endorse race-conscious policies and could provide fresh fodder for President Trump to portray his 2020 challengers as outside the mainstream.
In the modern political sense, the term “reparations” is a little like “socialism.” It means very different things to different people, and the devil is in the details. Many think of direct cash payments to African Americans when they hear the word. Others think more broadly of investments that are specifically made by the government to lift communities of color. What one person calls reparations someone else might just describe as strengthening the social safety net. The fact that candidates are willing to use the term at all after generations of Democratic standard-bearers have seemed allergic to it reflects a sea change.
Oh please oh please make a demand for reparations as part of Democratic Platform.
That would be glorious...
The first response already says don't do it... though. :(

Yes! Please! It will be first rate  to see D candidates explain why wypipo whose ancestors were not in the US until after 1865 and why wypipo whose US ancestors had never owned slaves owe gigabucks to blacks whose families were not slaves going back 3 or 4 generations!
-
Well, I have no doubt that Lamond, the MrsCorpio primitive, has already spent his.
Like he's ever going to get it.
-
I see the primitives were quick to jump on board that train..... NOT!!
Classic case of not saying anything so as to not upset certain factions on the island.

So, if reparations were made, would that mean that racism was over? Affirmative action, over? Quotas and set asides, all done? No, of course not. Those things are never going away.
All it will do is INCREASE racial tension because wypipo who never owned slaves will see it as theft to go to blacpipo who never were slaves, breeding resentment. And then, when the blacpipo community is no better off, demands will be made for more payments, which will be met with massive backlash.
They might as well endorse the idea of a massive race war, because that's where this would lead.

1. Personally, while I support the notion in some degree, I think it would be a mistake politically.
We can't afford mistakes with either the person we currently have in the White House or with GOP control of the Senate. We need to take control of both -- now. Campaigning openly for "reparations" at this juncture will only hurt us -- and in the long run our country -- at this point in my view.
and LPC Noob "Lucid Dreamer" agreeing with him/her.
Yep, don't be honest about what you want to do, just spring it on the proles, silence/squash any who then oppose, and after a while the outrage will become the new normal ... making room for the next outrage.

How would one treat the descendants of black slave owners? What about the slaves who were paid? Do you subtract from the amount of reparations?
I’m so confused.

I'm confused because all of the white cracka leftists said electing the first negro president was going to end all the racism and heal the country.

Also, the ACW ended slavery in 1865. My relatives didn't arrive here until 35 years later, never having owned a single slave. Furthermore I was born in 1959, 94 years after the ACW. I don't owe anything to these race card playing assholes and neither does anyone else living in America today.
-
Let me be succinct:
The ONLY acceptable solution for reparations is the execution of all white people and the confiscation of all their property along with distribution to the blacks. That is what they REALLY want. Notice when leftists are asked what the solution would be, they only hem and haw, but that's because they know that if a "solution" is found, they can't keep banging the racist drum. Until the executions occur that rid the planet of evil wypipo, reparations will ALWAYS be pushed by the Left.

3. It would be a hugely divisive issue nationally
The GOP would spin it 24/7 and it would certainly cost us a lot of votes. This is absolutely not the election cycle to be considering this. Unless it’s framed extremely carefully as a regeneration and equality program. I definitely wouldn’t have the word reparations anywhere near it.
Reparations repackaged as a regeneration and equality program--Americans won't fall for it. We won't get Grubered again. Leftists think they can get away with these schemes if they just give them an innocuous or pleasing sounding name.
Common sense gun legislation. Affordable Care Act. Regeneration and equality.

We should start by getting a refund for welfare and afirmative action, then have them bring in the chits showing how many bales of cotton they picked and we can pay them based on that.

According to DUpipo logic, if slavery was still practiced when your ancestors arrived they being white would probably have owned slaves and you being their descendants would have probably benefited from your ancestors probably owning slaves, so when you add up all those probablys, you definately owe money to people who probably have no connections to actual slaves.

A few of my ancestors were indentured servants, do I get anything?

Yep, a bill.

The Dem candidates are falling all over themselves to promise the MOST $$$$ to anyone who will vote for them.
Pocahontas Warren wants to give reparations to Native Americans. Wonder if she'll get any of that?

It's a Free Shit Bidding War among the D candidates.
