I attend meetings in my very red rural area where I am among many Trump supporters. Politics is not what we are there for, it is a support group for people trying to stay sober, although I have put up with a lot of crap and snide comments, they know I am a Biden supporting Democrat.

Last night after the meeting, I was talking to a man in his early 60's who runs a local auction house. He is an accomplished guitarist, who once went to California at the invitation of Buck Owens, to perform as warm up in a band. He is also a Trump voter.

A week ago, his 13 year old grandson was riding a hay wagon with his mom and brother being pulled by a tractor. The hay wagon rolled, and crushed the boy to death.

We started out talking about guitars. He showed me pictures on his phone of his beautiful Gibson electric, various Fenders and a Gretch. Also, 3 gorgeous hand made acoustics his son made for him.

Others came over to offer condolences for his grandson. He then showed pictures of a tall, tow headed 13 year old with a big smile, standing with his brothers.

I felt my chest heave, and fought to control the emotions. He hasn't been the same since this happened, and you can almost see the weight on him. For 5 minutes, everyone talked to him and their differences with me were unimportant.

How does a con man like Trump manage to fool an otherwise intelligent, big hearted man like this?

I dream of a day when my party finally reaches the hearts of these people, and somehow knocks down the wall of lies that the GOP has built in rural America.
Well, I don't know. Maybe this guy doesn't think schools should be encouraging young teens to "transition." Maybe he understands enough about economics to know that the Dems are bad for the economy. Maybe he doesn't buy the Chicken Little "the planet has only 9 years to live!!!!!!" BS. Maybe he thinks that a hand up is way different (and better) than the constant handouts that the Dems have used to buy votes for the last 60 (at least) years. Lots of reasons. Maybe this DUmmie can shut up and learn something from the guy.

He knows and loves the music of many black and latino artists, and went out of his way to greet and make feel welcome black visitors we have had from the city, when others were cold.

There has to be a way, and I wish my party would work on finding it.

I grew up in West By God Virginia. The influence of Byrd and Rockefeller are as ingrained as Coal Dust.

Motown, Earl Klugh, George Benson, Andrae' Crouch, Duke Ellington, Carlos Santana, Malo ... what's not to like. Blacks are few enough in number here in Silicon that we've not had occasion to welcome any into our home. OTOH, the two churches our family have attended since GHWB's first year in office have, at various time, had pastors who were/are black, Hispanic, Chinese, Iranian, Indian, and Korean, and we have welcomed into our home missionaries who are Mexican. The lead pastor of our current church is Korean and the church also has staff pastors who are Iranian, Indian, and Korean.

Two things I know: 1. I make no effort and have no intent to be a contradiction of Libs' and Progs' stupidly false stereotypes of conservatives and Evangelical Christians. 2. I am very far from unique or uncommon in this respect.

The various walls between Dems and normal rural people have been built by the Dems: stupid enviro-regs; contract- and 5th-Amendment-violating land-use restrictions and land grabs; anti-Christian attacks; arrogant stereotyping. Just off the top of my head. Trying to force farmers and ranchers to mass-switch from gas- and diesel-powered tractors and combines and etc. that have useful lives numbered in decades to short-ranged electric tractors, etc. whose batteries will have to be replaced in a decade or so at a cost north of $10,000 should go over marvelously.
