We cannot defeat Palin by attacking her family and values.

Fundamentalists love her. Attacking her family only shores up her support.

They love her because she is a mom just like them. She is juggling work and full time plus job. A lot of mothers struggle with this every day. If we even hint that she cannot handle being VP and a mom at the same time, we are being "sexist". After all, Obama is a father who wants to be a full time president. Why can't a mom be a full-time VP?

If we attack on this front, the only reaction is defensive. It makes sense that fundamentalists would react this way as we are attacking their core belief system.

The only way to defeat Sarah Palin is to defuse her family choices and make them a non-issue. Then her supporters are forced to face the real issues.

Validate her choices and fully support them. If Obama were to make a statement as "I fully support Sarah Palin's choices with regards to her family. Lot's of mothers face similar choices every day. I have only the utmost respect for working mothers and the difficulties that they face. My administration will make sure that working mothers have the support they need to meet their challenges."

Now her supporters have nothing to react against. They are left to wonder themselves if it makes sense to try to be VP when you have a Down's Syndrome child and a pregnant teenager. And what if she becomes president? (Remember we cannot even hint at these questions -- but they will come up. It's only natural to wonder.)

Then, too, the inherent sexist nature of some fundamentalist viewpoints will come to the fore in their own minds. They will defeat themselves.

Likewise, attacking Palin on experience doesn't work because it triggers defensive reactions. The way this has to be done is with positive statements about her abilities. This raises the bar considerably higher and forces her supporters to confront her very real inexperience.

On other issues, a similar but less forgiving tack is prudent. Just present the facts and say something like "this doesn't necessarily disqualify her as a VP candidate. Many politicians, both democratic and republican have faced similar issues." Then drop it. The unspoken speaks for itself.

Just my humble opinion. Fire away...

1. Her family values are relevant because she wants to force them on my family

If she kept her "family values" to her family and not all or our families it would not be an issue and the whole Bristol thing would never need to be known.

They brought it up, they are the ones that want to ban abortion and teach abstinence only. They want to tell us what we can do in our house.

Yeah, it is relevant.

3. Of course it is relevant. That is not the point. Erasing any defense of them is.

Her values are not my values. I don't want them forced on me either. What I wish to do is erase any potential argument that these are the reasons we attack her. If you believe in Palin's values, you mind will not be changed by attacks on those values. If you don't share her values, you won't like her anyway, so what is the point of attacking her directly on that front?

12. You are talking electoral strategy and how to go after independent voters.

I agree that going after Palin's "hypocrisy" for professing "family values" and yet having a pregnant teenage daughter may backfire with some independent voters who find themselves in similar situations.

While you are talking electoral strategy. Conservatives are going to vote for McCain and liberals are going to vote for Obama. Independents and moderates are going to decide the election, as they almost always do. Will charges of Palin's hypocrisy with respect to her stated "family values" versus her messed up family cause her to lose credibility or to become a more sympathetic figure for independent voters whose lives may reflect the same issues as her family?

Many here love to post versions of "Palin, you ain't pushin' that "family values" sh*t on me. You're a hypocrite." That is fine and is really what an internet message board for like-minded individuals is designed for. As far as actually getting Obama elected, I think your electoral strategy is very sound, as is Obama's own desire to "leave the families out of it".

6. Exactly. And let's face it. That's all Palin has to offer.

She was picked because she's such a "family values" religious fanatic. Her hypocrisy is right out in the open now. (Maybe her husband and daughter missed the last "Purity Ball").

4. Uh. her family values suck and she wants to impose them on us.

Plus Palin is a huge hypocrite.

Sarah Palin, using state of the art genetic screening tests that are based on scientific advances rooted in Darwin's theory of evolution, chose to have her last child knowing that he was retarded. Good for her that she was able to make that choice and has the courage and economic resources to raise her child.

Palin is determined to deny every other woman that same choice, and she is determined to befuddle our children with creationist pseudo-science, in the process wrecking our ability as a nation to continue to advance the great works of civilization in advancement of scientific knowledge. Her family values are a danger to my family and a danger to our nation.

Aren't generous social programs imposing the "values" of Democrats, liberals, and primitives on us?

There's some of us after all who think the subway cat could be working for a living, rather than draining our wallets.

5. Attacking her family is a loser. Attacking her values is crucial.

Her values cast the difference between progressives and troglodytes in high relief. Abuse of power. Fiscal irresponsibility. Destructive educational priorities. Gender hypocrisy. Climate change denial. Imprudent energy policy that cleaves to the current unsustainable status quo. Cruelty to animals. Political advantage trumping the need to govern. etc., etc., etc.

The entire Republican litany. She is a poster child for everything wrong with Republicanism in a way that McCain has managed to obscure in his own public persona.

The question to ask America is, Do you want these values ruling your life?

7. Banning Library Books is not a Family Value

No, banning library books isn't a family value; it's a Democrat, liberal, and primitive value.

8. Fundies aren't swing voters. They won't vote for Obama.

Our best shot is for them to stay home. Attacking her "family values" is one way to do that. Attacking her lies and lack of qualification is another.

No one is or was excited to vote for mcpow. ONLY the fundies are excited about Palin. And many moderates are pissed that Palin go the nod. She is a net negative for mcpow, and is sinking his campaign.

9. My mother-in-law tells me today

That her friend, start broken record here, a life long democrat in her 70's, is going to vote for McStumpy. She doesn't like the way that Palin is being attacked. Her friend says she was also a Hillary supporter before. I guess that was a 50-50.

11. another meaningless anecdotal tale about a friend/relative/whatever who's a life long dem and is pissed off about Clinton/Palin/whatever and is voting for McCain. Too bad that Obama now has the support of 81% of hillary supporters. And that number will likely continue to rise.

It must be that time of the month for the Obamaite cali primitive, but I thought she was too old for that.

Please please please let them all act like Cali!  That way we can have every election handed to us on a golden platter and no one would even have to campaign.  Our platform could be... "Vote for the person that douchebag moron Cali hates"

It's taken me awhile to formulate what the DUmmies consider a "Perfect World". It consists of free everything, where all the liberal women are spaded and all the liberal men are neutered and they have drug enhanced endless perverted sex orgies. ......I say give'em their hearts desire. It'll be a drain on the economy and society in general for awhile but in the end........they cease to exist.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Sometimes i almost feel sorry for them with all their hate and pettiness.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

The problem with them pounding the family values issue is they have NO ****ing idea what family values are. I DO hope they keep it up...they're attacking every family/mother in America. That won't win them the election.

Idiots.

God they're missing the whole damn point.

They missed the damn point on Michelle Obama's speech, too, but then so did she.

It's supposed to be hard. We're supposed to be stretched to provide for our kids. We're supposed to suffer for the good of our children.

Michelle talked about the sacrifices of her parents, but then said she wants it so nobody has to suffer any more to sacrifice for her kids.

Idiot.

It's the parents suffering and working hard that got you where you are. If it were easy, you wouldn't appreciate the sacrifice. You wouldn't get it. Hard work makes success. I respect the Palin family because they sacrifice for each other.

I don't think families want handouts. They expect life to be hard. Just get government out of the way so there are not as many obstacles. I'll provide for my family. Cut my taxes, make sure no terrorists blow up buses around me, and I'll pretty much be able to do the rest.
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

I take it that the operative word is "almost."
