Moving Toward Google-Free
« on: August 08, 2017, 09:45:56 AM »
Google's firing of that employee who pointed out Google's  lack of ideological diversity has me POed. AFAIK, they have the right to do that. Just like I have the right to vote with my, ummm, computer mouse.

Here's where I'm at. I still use Chrome, it being less obnoxious to me than: IE; MS's new browser, which was not ready for prime time when I checked it out (a year or more ago); FireFox. I just figured out how to make Duck Duck Go my default search engine. The big question is: Is there a good, full capability browser that is not IE, not Firefox, and not Chrome? Has MS brought their new whatever-they-call-it up to snuff? Something else (Opera and Iron were annoyingly not full capability when I tried them a couple of years ago)?
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

I've been moving in the same direction here.
Firefox and the games they kept playing with java and flash have forced me into using Chrome... mostly because of the devices I have to manage at work. IE just doesn't have the plugin support I need for browsing the public internet... adblock, element hider and noscript are crucial for me, I can't live without those anymore.
I still use a "portable" ver of firefox 40 (old) that remains comparable with work related internal devices and their management interfaces.
So for me, I still use google for all my tech related queries just because the results are sometimes better. DuckDuckGo is my search engine for everything else.
There are numerous other browsers out there, but they come with certain levels of pain. They mostly lack plugin support which makes them a non-starter for me.

I'm aware of Safari, but I have a WIntel machine, so I don't know how well Safari will run on it. I've had enough frustration with the Deciduous Fruit Computer Company's products that I'm not inclined to give it a try. Maybe I'll check out MS Edge (their new browser whose name I just remembered). Right now I'm more POed with Google than with MS (They lost me long ago through their years of neglecting IE 6. By the time IE7 rolled out I'd been using FF, and IE7 offered no compelling reason to come back.).

Opened up Edge and have a half dozen tabs going, various sites I frequent. So far it's reasonably usable, not mis-rendering anything. Looks like a workable alternative to Chrome. I have a Win10 machine, for which it was created (and at present is the only OS on which it runs).

I haven't tried it, rumor had it that Flash and Java either aren't supported or don't work well.
Have you tried any of that? I'm curious now

FZ, I really am not technoid enough to always know the nuts and bolts underlying the web stuff I use. I vaguely remember, when this computer was new and I briefly tried Edge, Pandora not working. Pandora has been working just fine for me. I'm also listening to something at present from You Tube and it's working fine. I vaguely recall some browsers (this was a time when I was trying browsers like Opera and Iron and??) not rendering sites like RaceRaves, PJMedia, and Breitbart properly, and those sites have been fine, including playing an embedded video on PJMedia. So, if those sites use Java and Flash, Edge now does Java and Flash. I only went back to Edge starting last evening, so it's still on probation with me, but I haven't seen anything that Chrome can do but Edge cannot.

My work computer is not Win10, so my choices on it right now are IE??, Chrome, or Firefox. I've been using Chrome rather than FF, with IE for a few things. I may just move over to IE. I realize MS might tomorrow do something obnoxious along the lines of Brendan Eich or James Damore, but for now MS is less obnoxious to me than Mozilla or Google.

The problem with me becoming Google free is youtube. I use youtube more than any other internet service and there is not an adequate substitute.

My 600-pound gorilla is Gmail. I have nothing against it as such, but it was what I used - many years ago, now - to get off the merry-go-round of Name@internet-provider.com e-mail addresses. My 2 main addies are used all over the place - discussion sites, FB, Monster, etc.. The only other major "free" email service with which I'm familiar is Yahoo, and I think they're in a death spiral (is that the name of Trent's rock group on "Daria"?). Some of the Google-YT shenanigans against prominent vocal conservatives have me giving serious thought at least preparing to get off Gmail. I', a nobody, but if Google-YT ever goes all out against conservatives who are prominent, guess who's next. Invisible ordinary people like me.

Just a few minor notes, in case anyone is following this. I'm still using Edge.

The Cave's SW executes a very little differently on Edge. With Chrome, after posting, I have to manually Refresh to see that or other changes on the Main Index page. Not a biggie, but nice.

On CU, Chrome can't render my avatar for some reason. On the computers I use, at least. On Edge I see it, the bib and finisher's medal from a half marathon I did 2 years ago. I'm so accustomed to not noticing my avatar on CU that it took me several days to realize I could see it.

Edge renders the RaceRaves main page a little differently. The main page includes abbreviations of the most recently posted reviews. For each review it gives the name and location of the race, the "name" and avatar of the reviewer, part of the review text, and an overall rating. Instead of stars, the rating symbol is running shoes, 1 being very poor, 5 being excellent. In Edge the 5th shoe is kicked down to the next line. That it took me 4 sentences to describe it tells you how minor the oddity is to me. I wish it rendered it correctly, but it's well short of slightly annoying.

So ......... it's been about a month using Edge. It took a while, but I did encounter a few annoyances where I had to close tabs, Edge, and a couple of times I had to reboot my computer. The first time I had to reboot we were having trouble with our Internet being flaky. We got that fixed, and yesterday I had to "reboot" by powering of using the power/reset switch (i.e. one step short of unplugging the computer). Rendering quirks I can tolerate; having to refresh or close-and-reopen tabs I can tolerate. Tying my computer into knots so badly to require rebooting I won't tolerate. :argh: So, frustratingly, I'm back using Chrome. For all Google's sins, Chrome is stable. :argh:

I still use IE 11.

I use Chrome to see pictures that I can't get with IE.

I use Edge for those sites that are blocked by IE 11 & Chrome.

Apparently I made a lot of adjustments in an effort to protect my computer in addition to using Norton Security and Emsisoft that I often get "can't display that page" with IE 11 and Chrome.

Some sites result in a "blank page" on IE 11 or Chrome so I go to Edge.
