Probe launched in suspicious firing of inspector general
« on: June 16, 2009, 04:15:54 AM »
In the wake of the White House's highly controversial firing of an independent inspector general, one U.S. senator is demanding answers and justification, requesting records that extend even to the Office of the First Lady.

As WND reported, President Obama fired Gerald Walpin, the inspector general in charge of rooting out corruption in the AmeriCorps program, shortly after Walpin called for action against a prominent Obama supporter, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who had misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants.

"I was troubled to learn that last night your staff reportedly issued an ultimatum to the AmeriCorps Inspector General Gerald Walpin that he had one hour to resign or be terminated," Grassley stated in a letter to the president. "Inspectors general were designed to have a dual role reporting to both the president and Congress so that they would be free from undue political pressure. This independence is the hallmark of all inspectors general and is essential so they may operate independently, without political pressure or interference from agencies attempting to keep their failings from public scrutiny."

Grassley's letter reminded Obama of the statute requiring the president to submit 30 days notice to Congress of an inspector general's dismissal and stated, "No such notice was provided to Congress in this instance."

Hi,

This has been all over the news.  Please do not blast me for using the article from World Net Daily, it is documented in several places.  This was just one of the more thorough articles.

It seems that the IG was investigating a friend of BO's and they fired him for it.  The law says the president must give congress 30 days notice if he wants to fire an IG, plus supply congress with the reason.  BO voted for the law a couple years ago.  He was given one hour to resign or be fired.  The IG was on Beck last night and seems very credible.  His concern is if this is allowed to happen it will affect all other investigations by the investigator general's office.  They are supposed to be independent.  To me this is a gestapo technique to say the least.

What really galls me is their should be outrage on both sides of the aisle.  They raised hell when Gonzalez fired a couple attorneys which he was legally entitled to do which is pale by comparison to this one.  I wrote my democrat senator and told him he either speaks out against it or he is a co-conspirator, there is no in between on this issue.

Gerald Walpin, Inspector General of the Corporation For National and Community Service, was fired by President Barack Obama.

The Wall Street Journal has in depth coverage of this also.

This is much bigger than the attorney firings under Bush.

If this investigation goes anywhere, there's enough info in that article to draw up articles of impeachment right now.  **** the motive, 0bama flat out violated the law.  His only defense would be that he wasn't aware of the law, however, he himself voted for it, so how can he politically admit he was unaware of what he's voting on?

This is close to, but not quite, as bad for him as the "Saturday Night Massacre" was for Nixon, or it should be, at least.

While I hope you are right, who is gonna vote to impeach him?  He has them all under his magical control.

Too bad that the liberal kool-aid is killing the whole country and not just those who drink it.

I have seen this guy on TV twice since he was fired. Judge Palatanio (sp), Fox contributor, flat out stated that Obama broke the law by not giving a reason for the firing and not advising Congress with the 30 day rule.

Obama is becoming more like an authoritarian King every day. I would not be surprised if he does not pull a Hugo Chazez who appoints himself ruler over the country for life.

Well, if he does, someone will kill him.....I had hoped that wouldn't happen. We don't need another dead saint.....especially this one.

Just think of the socialism and gun laws that would be inacted if someone shot him. All in the name of his leg-I-see.

May as well call him King Barack. Divine Rights of Kings is back, even though it has been discredited for 500 years.

I've sometimes called him Obamachus Epiphanes.

It looks like he wasn't the only one fired.

From Hot Air:

Obama has fired 2 IGs in 2 weeks, leashed another

The firing of Gerald Walpin as Inspector General was not an isolated incident, as the Chicago Tribune reports today.  Two more IGs have been dismissed in the past two weeks, and Senator Charles Grassley has started demanding answers.  The sudden push to rid the government of independent watchdogs appears to coincide with Barack Obama’s plans to use government spending to get control over more aspects of American life, such as with stimulus spending, the financial sector, and volunteer organizations (via Dan Riehl):
Quote
He was appointed with fanfare as the public watchdog over the government’s multi-billion dollar bailout of the nation’s financial system. But now Neil Barofsky is embroiled in a dispute with the Obama administration that delayed one recent inquiry and sparked questions about his ability to freely investigate.
The disagreement stems from a claim by the Treasury Department that Barofsky is not entirely independent of the agency he is assigned to examine — a claim that has prompted a stern letter from a Republican senator warning that agency officials are encroaching on the integrity of an office created to protect taxpayers. …
The dispute comes as Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is looking into the abrupt firings within the last week of two other inspectors general ¿ one of whom was fired by the White House and the other by the chair of the International Trade Commission.
Both inspectors general had investigated sensitive subjects at the time of their firings.
Grassley is now concerned about whether a pattern is emerging in which the independence of the government’s top watchdogs — whose jobs were authorized by Congress to look out for waste, fraud and abuse — is being put at risk.
