More deadly earthquakes could follow the huge tremor which has killed at least 150 people and injured 1,500 in central Italy, experts have warned.
The earthquake that hit the Abruzzo region at 3.32am happened on a faultline where tremors are common, meaning the 6.3 magnitude event may not be the last.

Up to 50,000 people have been left homeless in L'Aquila, around 60 miles east of Rome, and in surrounding villages, with up to 15,000 buildings destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

Hundreds of survivors are still thought to be trapped under the rubble, and a desperate search and rescue mission is ongoing.

The Italian president, Silvio Berlusconi, has declared a state of emergency and thousands of hotel rooms in the area have been requisitioned to provide shelter for those who have been displaced.

Obama to the rescue:

Quote
The United States said Monday it would donate 50,000 dollars in emergency aid to Italy after a powerful earthquake killed at least 100 people.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the earthquake. Our embassy in Rome will provide 50,000 (dollars) in emergency relief funding," State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters.

Italian authorities told the United States they did not need rescue teams, Wood said.

I'm sure Italy is in much better position than some 3rd world hole that just tried to swallow a tsunami but considering the dollar amounts the US has spent to buy Chinese condoms in the name of economic stimulus 50 grand seems paltry.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I'm beginning to think that "The Zero" doesn't fully understand the use of zeroes.

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

$50K seems like such a paltry offer, even if the Italians said they didn't need boots on the ground to help.  They were saying that this happened in a high altitude cold area, so they must need temporary shelters, blankets and much more. $50K would not even cover an hour of travel time for 0Bama and his foreign entourage.

"ROME, April 6 (Reuters) - An Italian scientist predicted a major earthquake around L'Aquila weeks before disaster struck the city on Monday, killing dozens of people, but was reported to authorities for spreading panic among the population.
The first tremors in the region were felt in mid-January and continued at regular intervals, creating mounting alarm in the medieval city, about 100 km (60 miles) east of Rome.
Vans with loudspeakers had driven around the town a month ago telling locals to evacuate their houses after seismologist Gioacchino Giuliani predicted a large quake was on the way, prompting the mayor's anger.
Giuliani, who based his forecast on concentrations of radon gas around seismically active areas, was reported to police for "spreading alarm" and was forced to remove his findings from the Internet.
Italy's Civil Protection agency held a meeting of the Major Risks Committee, grouping scientists charged with assessing such risks, in L'Aquila on March 31 to reassure the townspeople." Link

Has this guy found a reliable way to predict earthquakes or was it coincidence?

Could be.  There's a guy that comes on Coast to Coast AM a couple times a year that watches newspaper classified ads for missing pets.  He uses that to predict earthquakes.

The UN called us "stingy" when G.W. provided MILLIONS to tsunami relief in indonesia.

It will be very interesting, indeed, to see what the UN call us after oh-bum-er hands over a platry $50,000.
