lets have some real talk about student loans

I am a teacher with a master's degree.

I was a non-trad student. We borrowed money so we didn't have to drive and miss more time with our girl so we took the loans, lived in married student housing.   What does this even mean?

Our vehicle crapped out so we had to get a different care.. The only way we could get a care that would get us to class and back was to buy a vehicle. Student loan paid for that as well.   There's a lot going on here.  Is someone who's claiming a master's degree trying to spell the word CAR or is Pam trying to say something else?  Also, it's nice to see Pam is admitting to how some people see the student loan program.  They bought a car using the student loan program and she's advocating for wiping out student loan debt ... wish someone would give me a 'care'.

20 years later, with two bachelors and a master . Seems like the bill is where it started even after paying on it for 20 years.

with our combined loans we pay over 800 a month. Just think how much that would add to the economy?

I always thought the idea of going to college was to increase one's earning potential.  I've seen people with higher education laugh at those who chose the trades.  The ones who chose the trades came out of the gate making more than those with degrees and had 4 (or more) years of earning to add to their bottom line of life.  Then it was supposed to be those with college degrees would catch up somewhere in the middle, and eventually out earn their tradesman counterparts to finish higher on the scale at the end.  I'm guessing this isn't so much the case and now there are a bunch of folks pissed to find out their degrees are worthless, or they're bitter because someone is expecting them to pay them back for the money borrowed.

5. God yes.

I think warren’s proposal is to tax the 75,000 richest Americans 2% per year.

It used to be that some rich Americans felt the need to give back to society. That’s fallen by the wayside. I think she’s onto something.

I paid my student loans off over many years. My kids don’t have loans - merit scholarships cover all or most of the costs - and I still feel like loan forgiveness will have a generational effect for not just millennials.

If millennials aren’t buying houses and are delaying marriage/kids, then eventually we will need to open the borders to bring in enough workers to take care of all the old folks.

Most still give a lot of money, but I'll bet if you go back and look at historical tax rates you'll find a pretty good correlation between tax rate hikes on the 'wealthy' and a decrease in charitable giving.  Basically, if you're going to take it from me to give to someone else, why should I give the same rate I was before.  Government theft sucks for more than one reason.

I think I can translate some of this:

Quote
We borrowed money so we didn't have to drive and miss more time with our girl so we took the loans, lived in married student housing.

Pam and BF were so horny he got her pregnant and married her instead of handing her a check to pay half of the charge for an abortion. Or maybe they just got married without the pregnancy. At any rate, Pam and hubby chose to get married and chose to have a child a child while both were still in college. And rather than finding cheaper housing with one of the two parental units, Pam and hubby spent quite a bit of money above their tuition and books for the college's student housing (and board?). Their "income"? Plus or minus a part-time job or two, they dumped the cost of all their choices - getting married while in college, having a child while in college, expensive student housing instead of more or less free housing with family - into their student loans.

Quote
Our vehicle crapped out so we had to get a different care.. The only way we could get a care that would get us to class and back was to buy a vehicle. Student loan paid for that as well.

An event common in life, a car breaking down and being beyond economical repair compounded Pam and hubby's unwise choices. Instead of riding a bicycle, taking the bus, and catching rides with friends, or getting help from family Pam and hubby chose to make their situation worse by buying a car and dumping that cost into their student loan.

I suspect much more not necessary stuff got dumped into their student loans.

Quote
Seems like the bill is where it started even after paying on it for 20 years.

::)  :thatsright: Gee! Paying just the interest as it accrues or maybe a very little more results in the loans being paid down super slowly? Who'd athunk it?! Pam must've been out doing drugs or a BF during the weeks when her Math class covered compound interest. :thatsright:  ::)

Pam and hubby chose not to pay down their loans aggressively. But they found the $$ for at least one cruise, as evidenced by a pic of herself Pam posted to FB. And probably many more similar choices in which $$ that could have paid down their student loans went to other unnecessary stuff. Making unwise $$ choices is not illegal or immoral, but Pam is not owning her and hubby's lack of wisdom.

Quote
with our combined loans we pay over 800 a month. Just think how much that would add to the economy?

::) Pam seems to be dumb enough to think that the money disappears rather than being plowed back into the economy by whoever hold her and hubby's loans. ::)

Is this wet fart asking me to pay for her car?  I worked my way through college and had no debt but I am expected to pay for others?

Of the 6 members of my immediate family, I'm the only one I know had a student loan. I don't know about my beloved DIL, but she and my son are not making student loan payments. So either she financed her UC Berkeley education without a loan, or she paid it off quite a few years ago. Mine was paid off over four decades ago. My son, daughters, and wife financed or are financing their college educations without student loans.

A big change to the student loan program, made in the 70s IIRC, was that students could borrow $$ above the cost of their tuition and books. My loans were tuition and books only. Pam and hubby threw in their student housing (and board?), their new-to-them car, and God knows what else (Pampers? Boozy parties?  :stoner: ? Bail and fines from bar-hopping-gone-wrong? Spring break trip?)

KC

Pretty sure TILA existed when they borrowed, the disclosure would have told them what the payments would be to make forward progress.  My guess is that they may have 'Paid' for 20 years but not up to the scheduled minimums (Piling compounded interest back into the balance due) and probably with some periods of abeyance for things like that Masters degree.  Loading it up with living expenses like a 'Care' payment only poured gas on the cash flow shortfall.

She's the author of her own problem but far be it from any DUmmtard to actually take personal responsibility for their own bad decisions.

33. As someone who still has SL this would be a great boost to our discretionary spending

We have been paying on them for 20 years but it seems like the balance never goes down.

Tomorrow, I have to call a number -I got three messages saying my SL was included in the navient/Sallie Mae mess and I could get reduced or even forgiven.

That would allow me to spend more on things we would like to have.

At least she was honest here ... she admits she would like to spend 'more' on things they would like to have instead of saying she would like to 'buy' things they would like to have.

Here's a dumb argument.

13. I think your loans should not be forgiven

but the interest on them reduced to the federal discount rate.

This way, more of your payment (and past payments) would pay down the principal and you'll be debt free sooner.

Forgiving the loans would be a slap in the face to those who lived frugally, delayed starting a family and held several jobs to become debt free.

15. That's like saying

free (or subsidized) childcare would be a slap in the face to those of us who paid our childcare ourselves. How do we ever move forward on anything if we worry those who didn't have those benefits previously?

I grant you, there is some unfairness to everything progressive when it comes to those who've suffered in the past.

Man I wish some of these idiots would bring this dumb stuff over here.

radical noodle, do you not understand that you go to college to make yourself more marketable and to increase your earning potential?  So no, these things do not equate.  Nor do the stupid arguments equating this to welfare, or SNAP, or any other government handout.

These people are spending 4 years + of their lives thinking they will be making more money due to their sacrifice.  Why should I pay for that?  I don't have any college debt because I chose a different career path.

Once again, the low-performers are looking to stiff someone else with the bill.

I like the idea promoted by the venerable Instapundit that if a student loan goes into default that the educational institution be required to pay back one half of the money they received while making the student liable for the entire amount that they borrowed.  Giving the institution some "skin in the game" would make them look twice at who they are admitting and the courses of studies that are approved.

It is often said that if something is earned, it is appreciated more than if something is given to you.  Forcing students to be accountable for their student loan debt should encourage them to use the money to get an education that will allow them to succeed and pay off the loan.

If future students know they won't have to pay for their college education, many of the slackers (DUmmies) will take meaningless courses and basically jack off during their entire college career.

She's setting up for another GoFundMe begathon.

Last time she was looking for $30K:  https://www.gofundme.com/pamelas-crohns-disease-relief (https://www.gofundme.com/pamelas-crohns-disease-relief)

This line cracks me up "the district said it needed Special Education Teachers".  I wonder if that means they were looking for teachers for student with special needs or looking for teachers who were special education students.  With Pam it's anyone's guess.

This is only one of many of Pam's GoFundMe requests.  She had others for medical care, dental care and just covering bills.  She also posted about how she was hitting up the church food-banks.

However her severe financial problems seems to be somewhat fluid because she just recently sold her house and bought a new condo and just a few days after posting about how destitute she was, she posted about her brand new vehicle.

and some different long term medicines things seem better. I have not even been in the hospital this school year.

after 16 years our jeep started giving us major fits and we started looking around.

Well, we just walked out with a 2019 Jeep renegade Limited.

It has all the bells and whistles.

This will probably be our last care barring something that happens otherwise.

I am very happy .

So, a 2019 Jeep? Top of the line? What are the odds she paid cash? I'm guessing slightly better than the odds of the St. Louis Browns and Seattle Pilots playing each other in the 2019 World Series.

A 2017 commutermobile from Hertz/Enterprise/Avis would be a much better value. Or maybe a 2018 car dealer service department loaner commutermobile.

For a person who supposedly saw death's door recently and has a large decades old unpaid student loan(s), Pam & hubby sure are making very obviously silly, borderline improvident, $$ decisions. Are they planning to die with the loan(s) unpaid so someone else has to pay it? Are they planning?

An event common in life, a car breaking down and being beyond economical repair compounded Pam and hubby's unwise choices. Instead of riding a bicycle, taking the bus, and catching rides with friends, or getting help from family Pam and hubby chose to make their situation worse by buying a car and dumping that cost into their student loan.
Panning back on this a little bit:

If they're in student housing, whyinahell do they need a car at all?  They're on campus, and everyone else at school walks to class, so why couldn't she waddle her ass across campus to the humanities building the same as everyone else?  Of course, this assumes that hubby was a student at the same time, too.  But if he was not a student, then whyinahell wasn't he out there making a living while dementedjeep was in class all day?  Then he could have, since all of their housing costs were paid, saved up a bunch of money for a down payment on a house, maybe paid for some child care, or, I dunno, maybe made some early payments on those student loans that weren't accruing interest so long as poopypants was still in school.

None of this is really adding up here.  Pooping Pam has to have either lived pretty high on the hog in college, or her husband is just an abject bum who sat around and smoked pot all day for a couple of years while Pam was in grad school, or something that just doesn't fit into anything remotely like what normal people do.
