Sons lesson in government.
« on: October 24, 2008, 12:09:22 PM »
So, I was sitting with my son in the parking lot of the local post office last night. We were waiting for his scout master to show up with a chainsaw and a trailer. The post office has had 2 trees down in the parking lot for 8 months. We were there to cut them up and remove them. Scout Master had taken that on as a service project for my son and another scout for their community service requirement for their next rank advancement.

While we were sitting there son asked me why the government hadn't already had them removed. I told him it would probably take an act of congress and 50 acres of trees just for the paperwork to get them moved.....little did I know.

The scout master showed up and I asked why they hadn't been removed. I was right. The lady post master had placed an "order" for the P.O. service(?) crew to remove them. Took her 2 months to get the answer that they had no one qualified to run a chainsaw. Put in a request as to what she should do about them. Another 2 months and the answer was, get the lawncare crew that contracted to cut the grass to do it. She put in a request for the estimated funds required. When she got the money OK'ed, the lawn crew said they couldn't do it because their insurance does not cover anyone using a chainsaw.  So then she put in a request for the purchase of a chainsaw......request denied.

So last night we cut, loaded and hauled off 2 trees for the US government. ....for free. Hope some tree hugger doesn't sue us for messing with mother natures handywork.

The funny part about what you said....  A couple of years ago a scout group cleaned up a city park around here.  The unionized city park workers sued because the scouts did it and violated the union contract. :thatsright: :thatsright: :thatsright:

A similar situation exists in St Paul, MN. The streets and highways are filthy most of the time. I asked why the city didn't use some of it's jailees to clean up the streets ?? I was informed that they had attempted that but was stopped by the city employees union.
