I received these this week:

Dear Jinx,

Bottled water is a waste of money, oil, and landfill space - one we can easily fix to make our world a little better.

Let's Break the Bottled Water Habit today!

Bob Fertik

In a financial crisis, our focus tends to be on the big ticket items - our homes, our savings - and rightly so. But when trying to make ends meet, we also need to look for ways to reduce unnecessary, often unconscious expenses. One such expense is bottled water.

On average, tap water costs U.S. taxpayers 0.2 cents per gallon - which is roughly 750-2,700 times cheaper than bottled water on a per gallon basis, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. It's also just as safe, if not safer. Over 90 percent of U.S. municipal water systems regularly meet or exceed the EPA's strict regulatory and monitoring requirements. Bottled water, on the other hand, is not as highly regulated. So why are you breaking your budget when you can break the bottled water habit? Take the pledge today.

In addition to cost, bottled is waste of natural resources and a huge environmental problem. Did you know that making bottles to meet Americans' demand for bottled water requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel some 100,000 cars for a year? In addition only a small percentage of bottles are actually recycled every year, where do the rest go? To landfills where they cause numerous issues. Break the Bottled Water Habit today and help the planet as well as your pocketbook.

As an added bonus to the savings, New American Dream is giving away some terrific prizes to those who get the most other people to pledge with them. Take the Break the Bottled Water Habit pledge to get your shot at the prizes.

Thanks for pledging,
Lisa, Hanaa, Kim, Dave and the rest of us at New American Dream

Dear Jinx,

The Supreme Court and the Bush Administration have sided with polluters to strip vital protections from the Clean Water Act. That means that dangerous pollutants like E. coli, bacteria, mercury, PCBs, and dioxin could be contaminating the drinking water of more than 110 million Americans.

Urge Congress to restore the original protections by supporting the Clean Water Restoration Act.

Bob Fertik

Dear Friend,

Don't let polluters contaminate your drinking water.

Urge Congress to support
the Clean Water
Restoration Act today!

It's hard to believe, but polluters are actually allowed to contaminate your drinking water.

Why? Because the Supreme Court and the Bush Administration have sided with polluters to strip vital protections from the Clean Water Act. That means that dangerous pollutants like E. coli, bacteria, mercury, PCBs, and dioxin could be contaminating the drinking water of more than 110 million Americans .

But Congress can act today to restore the Clean Water Act's original protections by supporting the Clean Water Restoraction Act.

Click here to urge your Members of Congress to support this critical legislation.

If strengthened, the Clean Water Restoration Act would bring back safeguards for drinking water and ensure waterways and wetlands are kept pollutant-free. Even a handful more co-sponsors would build the momentum we need to get to winning votes of 218 in the House and 60 in the Senate.

But legislators are under pressure from developers and corporate polluters to stay quiet on clean water. Why? Because even though these dangerous pollutants have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and other health problems, keeping our drinking water clean would cut into the big polluters' profit margin.

It's this simple: Congress has a choice between standing with big polluters and their big profits or standing up for the health and well-being of more than one hundred million Americans.

Don't wait until it's too late—ask your Members of Congress to support the Clean Water Restoration Act.

Tens of thousands of concerned Americans have already contacted their Members of Congress to demand a strengthened law to protect our drinking water. Please add your voice today as Congress considers the Clean Water Restoration Act.

Sincerely,

Gene Karpinski
President, League of Conservation Voters

Well, what the hell?  Give up bottled water only to die from drinking polluted tap water?

What a pant load.  I just had to start an E. Coli testing regimen that goes on for an entire year.  We have to send our samples to the lab every 2 weeks for a year (and this is all at tax payer expense) to test specifically for E. Coli.  We also do tests for heavy metals regularly.  These tests are very expensive and very paperwork intensive.

I would have to look back through our tests but I'm pretty sure we test for everything on that list and we are a small water company.

Bottled Al Gore piss will be the next liberal fad drink.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

I seriously doubt that it will replace the "Obama Juice" for some time.
