futon
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:20:44 PM »
HI, I was thinking about buying a futon, and looking at the reviews, it is literally down the middle. It is just me that will using it(and Jingles, cat).
My stepdad will probably put it together, he will be pretty diligent and particular about putting it together. Obviously if one doesn't put it together properly(put the frame upside down), jump all over it(children)
I could really dress it up. I believe it is a full mattress, so I could buy a birdskirt to hide the bars, and invest in some oversized bed pillows(Joanne's) and cover those.
Opinions and advice are appreciated.....

It's years since I had a futon, but my advice is to get the best mattress you can afford and don't bother with a sofa bed type if you are using it every day as a bed as the mattress is thinner that way. There are quite a few reviews out there, read up on it because there seem to be lots of improvements since I had one.

Check out Sam's Club. I had one similar to this one: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod2830151 It was a pretty decent futon and very comfortable. (It was left with the ex) There are others: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/category.jsp?categoryId=1296 depending on how much you want to spend. I will suggest that you don't cheap out on one.

I slept on a futon for many years, I had a frame that was flat, so when it was made up it looked like a real bed.  I loved it.  The stuff it is filled with gets compact, so it doesn't last as long as a regular bed.  But, the cost is much less.

Funny, I am picking up a futon from a friend who is moving and doesn't need it anymore.  Gonna put it in my spare room, as a guest bed.

I made the huge mistake when buying a futon  by not buying the best mattress to go on it.      The futon was very expensive and I fudged on the mattress that after 10 years I still regret.

I had bought this for the living room and it soon went into the spare bedroom, I now had to spend 4 times the price of a mattress for the futon to  a regular sofa that lasted only 5 years.

Futons are wonderful as long as one can get the frame fairly inexpensive, we made the mistake of buying an expensive frame and a cheap mattress.
