Writer/Director John Hughes dies at age 59
« on: August 06, 2009, 04:08:33 PM »

John Hughes, director of culturally significant films such as "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," died suddenly today of a heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to Manhattan. He was 59.

John Wilden Hughes, Jr., born on February 18th, 1950 in Michigan, began as an advertising copywriter in Chicago.

In the last decade, he stepped back from the legacy he created to enjoy time with his family, maintain a functioning farm in northern Illinois and support independent arts. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, two sons, John and James, and four grandchildren.

No kidding, this was a shocker to me.

Just glancing at the list of movies he either wrote or directed, I've probably seen them all multiple times (with the exception of the Beethoven ones and more recent stuff).

I guess I always got John Hughes confused with John Waters.

Those were some great movies. :(

"Mr. Mom"... the movie that spawned a cottage industry of stay-at-home-husband movies in the 80's. :-)

RIP......while his movies may never be considered "great"....they will become classics...some already have.

Sad to hear about this. I think I've seen every one of his movies. I remember the first time I saw "The Breakfast Club", I thought it was so cool. The last time, the students all looked about twelve years old to me. R.I.P.

RIP Mr. Hughes. I grew up with his movies. "Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles" is some of the greatest films ever IMHO. I love you John Hughes!

Just thought about this: one of the Brit channels they show at the NATO gym here was playing Sixteen Candles not two days ago... Molly Ringwald was pretty good lookin' back then...
