Title: 14 Trillion Dollars
Post by: rich_t on April 26, 2011, 06:23:00 AM
A US one dollar bill is 6.25 inches long.

14 trillion one dollar bills laid end to end would stretch 87,500,000,000,000 inches or 7,291,666,666,667 feet (rounded up to nearest whole number).

That is still too big of a number for most folks to grasp.  So let's convert it to miles:

1,380,997,475 miles (rounded up to nearest whole number).

That is well over one BILLION miles.  Most folks can't fathom a billion miles either.

The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,901.55 miles.

14 trillion US one dollar bills laid end to end would wrap around Earth's equator just over 55,458 times.

It would stretch to the moon and back just over 2890 times. (Based on average distance from Earth to the Moon).

*Calculations done on Windows calculator.

Would make for a nice graphic when Congress is discussing reducing the debt would it not?

Let's stack those $1 bills and see how high the pile goes.

A dollar bill is .0043 inches thick according to the US Treasury.

14,000,000,000,000 x .0043 = 60,200,000,000 inches.

60,200,000,000/12 =  5,016,666,666 feet.

5,016,666,666/5280 = 950,126 miles.

All numbers were rounded off.  Windows calculator sucks.

I've noticed lately that every $100 bill or $20 bill seems to be brand stinking new, never circulated. ...and they're bad about sticking together so you better rumple them up a bit when you get them.

Just throw them away, that's what the rest of the world will be doing with them soon.
