PC Memory
« on: July 25, 2008, 02:45:54 PM »
Right now my computer has two sticks of 512mb memory. How much would an additional gig of memory increase the performance?

Since it already has two sticks of 512, would I need to get two more sticks of 512? Or would one 1gig stick work?

Get 2 1GB sticks -- it will make all the difference in the world.

But first check the specs on your computer -- make sure it can handle 2 gB and make sure you get the right memory type.

You need to know what type of memory your comp uses, and if the motherboard will support 2 gigs or more.
Going to 2 gigs (min I would reccomend) will be a BIG boost in performance.

I'm going to guess that you use DDR 400mhz ram. Here's an example of what you can get:

Just out of curiosity, how can one tell how much memory a computer has?

Once in a great while--it hasn't happened lately though, the past year or so--there's a little yellow box that opens from the clock portion of the monitor, the lower right-hand side, telling me that the computer is running low on memory and apparently Microsoft is allegedly installing more?

It's not a big deal, but how can one determine the memory?

I'm thinking along the lines of when one right-clicks the "My Computer" icon, he gets the size of the disc, the used space, and the free space.  Is there something like that for memory?

Of course, once I find out how much memory there is on this, it still won't mean anything to me, because I essentially leave the computer alone, not tampering with things on it, or adding things to it.

(In Windows XP) When you right-click the my computer option and select properties ; the amount of RAM memory is listed on the "general" tab , down the bottom near the processor specification.

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.  It should be the last line in the General box, listed under Computer.

If you want to see how much memory is being used, open the Task Manager and click on the Properties tab.  You get a real-time display of the usage % of your CPU and memory while the computer is running.  If your RAM utilization is unusually high during average use (75% or higher), you might want to consider buying more.

That box is referring to "Virtual Memory", a section used of your hard drive for quicker access. I hate letting Windows manage my "memory".  Franks, it sounds like you need to clean up your hard drive and get rid of some junk, like cookies, temp internet files and unused files/ programs. A disk defrag will do wonders after that. BTW, is your hard drive formatted to NTFS or FAT32 ??

I think you may be confusing that with the Transgronificator, available on most desktops pre-Windows.

Bought this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231036

and installed yesterday. Made a difference eventhough I was already at 1.2 G. However it was a mish-mash of sizes and only PC2100.
At the same time I discovered that I never set the CPU speed! My 3400+ AMD was running at 845mhz not 2.2ghz! :thatsright:  :hammer:

What did you have to do to set the CPU speed?

Let's not forget Valmorphication, which is a Vista add-in ($9.95 for initial license, $65.45 a year for maintenance).

What did you have to do to set the CPU speed?

With my motherboard you can push the delete key while the comp is booting up. That will get you to a window of different "adjustments" (tabs) one of which allows you to set the FSB (front side bus) to a certain mhz and then a mulitplier. Mines set at 200mhz FSB and a 8.5 multiplier to equal 2.21 ghz CPU "clock" speed.  This  is the area where you can overclock the CPU to make it run/act like a faster CPU. I think I've seen the AMD 3400+ run at what would be a 4000+ CPU (3ghz?), but the life of the chip is reduced. I leave mine alone.

Actually, you also need to make a modification to the processor to allow overclocking...... something about tying pins 1 and two together to allow the overclocking. It's usually done by a solder run or such other similar method.

Honestly, I've never seen that. Mine allows you to choose a multiplier ( I re-checked mine, it's 11X the buss speed) all done in the bios screen.
An example, right now I'm running 200 mgz FSB set to a 11X multi which = 2.2 ghz.
If I choose, and IF the chip can handel it, I could change it to 14X or 2.8 ghz. All done with never having to open up the machine.

This was done on some CPU's in order to "unlock" them. http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=gethowto&howtoID=16
