Service workers’ union launches ad campaign against RepublicansBy Kevin Bogardus - 08/11/11 03:00 PM ETThe Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is launching a $1.5 million ad campaign this August recess calling on Republican lawmakers to focus on job creation. SEIU President Mary Kay Henry told The Hill that GOP members on Capitol Hill have too often rejected cutting tax breaks for the wealthy and for profitable industries like the oil-and-gas sector during debt-reduction talks. Her union believes taxes should be raised and that new government revenue should be devoted to boosting jobs. “We want to make it crystal clear to every elected official that we do not want to cut our way out of this economic crisis. We want to address the crisis by being big and bold and getting people back to work,†Henry said. “We have no idea deficit here. We just have a deficit of will.â€The ads will run on television, radio and online, and the campaign will include phone calls and direct mailers. Emphasizing African-American and Latino media markets, the ads are slated to run in Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Nevada and Virginia, where the unemployment rate is much higher for those communities, Henry said.
