P2blk NCLB Bouncy
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:04:06 PM »
AEIOU? and some add Why?

Nice short education bouncy produced by proudlibKansan primitive. Unfortunately it lacks most of established elements of a first rate bouncy ( shrubs, cops, bricks, yada, yada) but (in its own way) it is actually pretty funny when one sees the way the hungry pups at DU lick it up. (almost)

So I'm sitting in a meeting of the women Dems in my district - why I'm bad
Didn't want to come but want to support this group because they do a lot to support our good Dems in this state. I have decided I'm so disgusted with Arne and co that I'm going to focus on local issues.

So I'm sitting here trying to look interested and they introduce a resolution about NCLB. And someone makes a motion to approve it.

My neighbor poked me and I am up on my feet before I know what I'm doing. Not even sure what the motion was. And I start venting. I tell these ladies the only resolution involving NCLB we should be approving is one that recommends it be abolished. I tell them that I voted for Obama but he lost me completely when he praised the mass firing in RI. I say Arne did not do anything in Chicago in 10 years that raised test scores and he converted high schools to military academies. And I ask these women if that's what they want for our children.

Then I launched into RTTT. Told them what it means and asked if they were willing to allow this administration to redirect Title I funds to a few schools rather than all schools serving low income kids.

And I described what Ravitch refers to as the ponzi scheme that comprises the current test score reporting.

When I stopped a woman across the room stood up and said "Thank you". She explained she is a state rep and agreed completely with everything I said.

And the women agreed not to approve the resolution!!

A small victory but a victory none the less.

To review:

I was zoning out at a meeting when the person beside me poked me and I immediately jumped to my feet, not knowing what the topic was, and launched into an inspiring diatribe on NCLB which brought down the house.

<Yea right> My guess? P2BLK has Tourette's Syndrome, was pulled salivating from the meeting before being administered her Thorazine.  Friend turned pale in horror, hurriedly left in disgrace, face covered. :-)

1. It has to start someplace...
I found in my experience with local political entities tied to the party are shy about supporting or even discussing controversial issues.

Let the games begin...

2. Good for you! More of us need to get involved in...
this. My brother & I were talking about our congresscritter who is a bluedog and I said we are just going to have to start going to the county meetings and making noise.

Education is a vital issue that we are going to have to work hard to take back from corps.

3. I think you're one of many
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 02:10 PM by Warpy
I know I've been out and around and waiting in a line for something when somebody has parroted a conventional talking point here or there and I've let fly--politely but firmly and with all the facts. I've had more agreement than disagreement and quite a few parrots have told me they'd changed their minds based on what I said.

We can't rely on the media to do their job. It seems like it's up to us.

6. Good work!
Thanks for speaking up! The more people become aware of the privatization schemes the better. I've tried keeping our local union membership informed and they're . Maybe they think the storm won't affect them.

10. Another vote for the status quo
This is just so sad and exactly why Democrats lose. Duncan wants accountability with Title I, equity in actual education. He doesn't want to just keep putting money into schools that don't educate. People are fed up with locking kids up because they live in school districts that don't educate. The only opportunity these kids have is their neighborhood school. It either needs to have at least 75% of kids at grade level, or move out of the way for someone who can.

If local teachers don't like this, then do something to change those schools.

...and the DUmmies immediately wanted to know if that was a pain pill and did it mean you could cut the pain pill in half and share it jointly with your bud.

The main issue I have with RTTT nonsense is that is strips away local control and hands it over to the state DOE, which is a puppet of the federal DOE.

Circumventing unions so bad teachers can be handed their hat and shown the door?   nah, not so upset.  I am concerned though about those schools where there really is no realistic way they can reach AYP as the majority of the students are extremely low income, homeless, mom is a crack head -- dad a gang banger, etc.     Penalizing teachers who volunteer to teach in those schools is not exactly fair, and those schools do exist.

It dulls the pain from the roach burns when you smoke that joint to far down.  :-)
