Have you ever been swindled?

Did you go to sleep feeling safe and secure (the SIPC is watching over me ~ not) only wake up to find your money all gone?

How is your life going after unexpected financial changes for the worse?

1. Never that badly

I think the worst I ever got swindled was when a guy sold me a bogus bag of dope. We met at a bar and I was already drunk. He and his girlfriend and I went back to my place to smoke some weed after he told me he had some. We smoked something that clean knocked me on my drunken ass and he told me he'd sell me a quarter bag for fifty dollars. I gave him the money, he gave me a bag, and we parted ways.

The next day I went to smoke some more and I don't know what was in that bag, but it wasn't the same stuff I had smoked the night before. It looked like weed but it was not potent at all.

2. Sounds like a swindle to me.

Even $50 seems like a fortune at times.

You musta pissed someone off big time.

Sorry to hear that.

11. No. He pissed me off and I almost killed him in an arcade. He paid to have me targeted.

All I lost in the exchange was a little time and a little money, but it involved a total psychopath - and yes, I feared for my life. He laced a joint and the world got weird. I'm pretty sure he was packing heat. The only way out was to pay him for something I knew I'd never get. I'm still pissed about it, but the asshole who hired him got arrested a few days later on drug charges, so I'm not as pissed as I was. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

14. I'm glad you're not as pissed as you were.

I can relate to being involved with a total psychopath. I was held at gunpoint for 5 hours when I was 18. That changed the way I looked at life. However, I never ask to be this strong.

6. If you count shitty contractors don't even get me started.

But I'm looking at about $10k to fix the dumb shit this asshole did.

of course we didn't discover it until about 6 years later - he's in the wind.

Investigate your contractors, folks.

The thing is, we had previously done business with a GREAT contractor and when we needed new work done we looked for him again but he had retired and moved. The asshole had done a small roof job for my other-in-law so we thought he'd be good but he ended up lying to us about most everything - he lied about pulling permits (we paid for them though), he lied about having competent subs, he lied about the material he used (Charged for the right thing but used cheaper substitutes)

10. The contractor our oil company recommended did such a bad job that we couldn't afford to heat our home. We had no choice but to move after we were ponzied as we no longer have money to correct the problems our contractor created.

For the last few winters we were paying way too much for heating oil alone. Add to that the cost of the electricity to push the heat around.

8. Not so much swindled as screwed over, to the tune of many thousands of dollars, in separate events. And it costs $$ to sue. And insurance doesn't cover lots of shit. And life is unfair. But I'm not bitter...

^^^from Nebraska, but originally from Pennsylvania.

She voted to make Pennsylvania into a cesspool, and then unable to stand it, moved to clean pure pristine Nebraska, and is voting to make Nebraska into a cesspool too.

Damn it.  I have no tolerance for such people.

15. I was watching the movie "The Grifters"

There is a scene in there where low level con man puts a $20 bill on the bar and orders a drink.

The bartender brings the drink and change for the $20 bill.

The con man tries to slip a smaller note to the bartender but the barkeep has seen this before and proceeds to beat the ca-ca out of the con man.

I found myself shocked at the violence but at the same time cheering that a con artist was getting what's coming to him.

It was one of those memorable scenes where I had mixed emotions about what was happening.

Maybe HopeHoops didn't understand the question.  Why would a swindler want to get revenge on someone they had swindled?  HopeHoops must have been the swindler.  And it was, most likely, a small potatoes drug swindle.

Yeah. There's this guy that's half white. He didn't actually swindle me, but he did swindle a bunch of people that were too stupid to breathe on their own. He's never ran anything but his mouth. Regardless, these fools put all their faith in him. After he demonstrated what he really was, these people put their faith in him again.

As I said, he didn't swindle me, but I'm still suffering the financial effects from him.

Years ago, someone tried to swindle me out of a pack of smokes from the convenience store I once managed. He and his friend kept asking for packs of cigs, then kept telling me they were the wrong pack, so they started to pile up on the counter. After I got to six packs, I swept them into a box I had on the floor behind the counter, then the game continued, but then I swept them off after getting to five on the counter, then four, then three.

Then they gave up and left.

Funny how they get angry about someone taking their money from them.

Somehow I feel good when the takers get taken.

Yes,yes, yes.   One big swindle is to take advantage of woman when they take their car in to a garage for servicing or State inspection.  A rattle in the exhaust can just be a loose bracket, cost 50 cents but they are told they need a whole new set up, cost at  $1,200.

Bait and switch, advertise a product that one has only one in the store and convince the customer to buy another at a 100% price increase.

Stores that put their brand at eye level and off brands on the bottom shelves. Much cheaper and most likely manufactured at the same plant as the store brands.

Home contractors that insist on you giving them money up front to buy needed supplies and instead of getting off your butt to price check at local stores and buying the supplies yourself write out a check and after it clears the contractor goes out of business.

My sob story has to do with Hubby buying a ride on lawn mower.  the year after the warrentee went out of date he began to have big problems.  He called the business we had traded with for 15 years to come and pick it up.   When he did not hear from the company he stopped in to find the business was under new management.   Bad news they told him the mower had a crack in the frame.  No good, somehow he was talked into buying another mower.   [ Hubby is a city Boy, what the heck did he know about lawnmowers?]

He comes home to give me the bad news and I asked how much of a trade in he got.   None he says, -----My darling husband had just fallen off a turnip truck.  Momma bear called the store and told them that when they delivered the NEW one to return the old one.   The delivery man was so rude and nasty to me when he came to the door, I darn near got the gun out.

Along comes No.1 son a bike rider that told him he had an accident and cracked the frame and bought some kind of gunk that fixed the problem and he road that bike another 3 years. Any riders out there have any idea of what this stuff is ????

What is the saying, " It takes a thief to catch a thief "   I have been swindled so many times in my life that now I know what to look for.    Hubby is just too honest for his own good, he has lived by the code that if he treats others as he wished to be treated that others will do the same for him.

I get swindled every 2 weeks. The government takes money out of my paycheck claiming that when I reach 65 they will give it back to me.

:-)    Problem is when you get a statement from #SS and add up the amount you paid into it, then check out what your allowance will be at retirement.  People live much longer today then when this system started.  Few back then lived to be over 70 years old, today you with science can live another 15-20 years.

If the Government gives back to you with interest say 20% the money you originally paid into it and offered you a deal one time lump settlement would you take it ?

Suppose you retire at 65, and manage to live another 20 years or more.   With the cost of living going up each year if you take a settlement then for the last 15 years of your life you get NOTHING.

Kind of surprised me when some co workers were having their IRS money changed so they would pay 4-5 times the amount and end up at tax time getting a return for enough money to head out to somewhere to visit family all over the world.   They lived within their means and come tax time were able to get all that money back.   Mean while most of us paid in the least we could and were lucky to get a refund for $600.00 bucks.

My Mom is 90 years old, she worked a good 30 years of her life, For the last 40 years she gets a check that started small but over the years has grown to big money.  when compaired to her first # SS check.    It cannot get much better then this, --So quit your bitching.

I guess most of them weren't swindled because very few of their claimed contributions were actually paid.

It is amazing how when all of your dealings are above board and of an honest nature, the likelihood of being swindled declines dramatically.

I did pay way to much for a rose in Paris once, I'd been drinking a fair amount of wine and a boy put in my hand as I was leaving a dinner boat tour and I handed him a couple of Euros.  A couple of moments later I realized that I had just paid about 4 dollars for a stupid rose, but of course he wouldn't give me my money back.  I ended up giving it to a nice British gentleman who followed me out of the boat to give to his lady.  They were both very appreciative.   :cheersmate:
