Ok, I got a 2002 Hyundai Accent. Just rolled over 120,000 miles on it. About 3 months ago, the check engine light came on. I took her to the shop to get checked out and they told me the entire exhaust manifold was shredded. I couldn't afford to fix it at that time, so they cleaned it out, and told me that eventually it'll get clogged up and the car will just stop running.
Well, two nights ago when I got out of work (about 10:30, and it was about 30 degrees outside) the car just wouldn't start. The engine would turn over, lights would come on, radio played, all that stuff. So I was pretty confident it wasn't the battery. Just to be safe I got a jump anyways. We spent about 10 minutes trying to jump it and nothing worked. My gas tank was a little low, only about 1/5th full, and with how cold it was we thought that might have been the issue. So I walked up to work the next morning when it had warmed up quite significantly, put another gallon of gas into it and still the same issue. She'd turn over but nothing else. I'm stuck thinking it's the exhaust issue.
Now the timing belt is getting a little worn on her as well. Could that be the problem?

The best thing is to find a code reader and check the engine codes. That'd give you a place to start. I can't imagine that an exhaust manifold would be "clogged up" Perhaps the catalytic converter. And what do you mean by "shredded" ?? If your exhaust manifold is getting clogged, then there's something going on that you weren't told about.

Well, his words where "it's shredded, and needs to be replaced". He also told me they cleaned it all out, and it should have extended the life on the car a bit. Whatever they did, it kept the check engine light off for a few days.

First, go find a code reader and read the codes. Maybe obtain one from the base hobby shop?? When you get those codes, let us know. This isn't rocket science, but the computer controlled vehicles can be tricky to diagnose. You'll have to be willing to get some dirt under your nails....... :-)

I don't have a problem with that. I did score a 93 on my mechanical aptitude on the ASVAB. :-)

Honestly I can`t imagine what he meant by "shredded" or what he supposedly did to clean it.
The convertor would plug before anything else I would think.
The timing belt could be an issue and if that broke or stripped the cogs off from would make for an engine that would crank without any ignition.
You could take the distributor cap off and have someone bump the starter to see if the rotor is turning to check.

Just a thought, but possibly a problem with the fuel pump? It also wouldn't hurt to put some gas in it. I had a car that would read @1/4 tank when it was bone dry.

bad news if the Timing belt is gone......Hyundais bend valves when that belt lets go....should be changed every 60k

It was reading about 1/5th of a tank, which usually means I got about 3 gallons left in it. I put another gallon in to be safe. It's only a 10 gallon tank, so i don't think it was dry. It might be the pump. I've been reading up, and it seems it could be one of 100 differant issues. I think I'm just gonna have to get it to the shop and let them figure it out themselves.

Yeah, and the engine compartments were big enough that two or three mechanics could climb in and stand around the engine while they did the work.

So finally worked up the cash to get this thing looked at. Fuel Gasket, and Catalytic Converter so far... $2,000 in repairs. :thatsright:

I don't who you are using, but unless they are doing EXTAODINARY work, your'e getting ripped.
I had an entire engine exchange done for roughly that much. (90 GrandPrix)

It's a bit more then that, but those where the two main things. And the exhaust system on my car is the most expensive it can be... california emmissions and all that. Almost doubles the price to repair it.

That is one of the things I hated about living in CA. Their damn emissions standards suck.

Since he has a 2002 eleanta IIRC, I suspect it is either the fuel pump gasket or possibly fuel injector gasket.

I think distributors and mechanical carburetors dissapeared by the mid-90s.

The 2003 Hyundai/Kia models had an electronic ignotion/distributor like every other car manufacturer. Most of the Spectra is still using parts from the previous Sephia model that preceeded it.

Kia has all of their factory service manuals online. It's definitely a feature I took advantage of when I had my Spectra.

Did they say anything about the manifold? I know some cars had manifolds that would come apart and cause problems, just wondering if they double checked yours.

Turns out the manifold wasn't the issue.
